Several months ago I picked up a F350 w/104K miles on it. It has a AT, 3.8 ratio rear and 4WD. I've been surprised at the great mileage that it was getting just after I got it...21mpg at 55mph w/cruise control, 23 mpg over the same route w/cruise control off.
My only problem with it is that it surges when it first starts (1300-1700 rpm at about 20-35mph) and has little power until it warms up. I've changed all filters and fluids, added a HPX line, replaced the CPS and replaced the EBP sensor (the tube was SOLID!). I've also converted to the new style 6.0 stock air filter.
Two questions:
1) Any suggestions regarding what the surging issue might be rooted in?
2) Any other sensor/parts that should be swapped out at ~100K?
Is the surging accompanied by a bunch of noise like a jet engine sound? That is probably the EBPV closing, and is completely normal until the truck warms up. You can easily make it go away by unplugging the EBPV sensor- dead center in the motor on the front of the pedistal- it's the only 2 wire plug anywhere in the area. Flip up the wire lock clip and slide the connector out. Here is a pic, the connector is just above the blue dot in the pic- harder to find with everything in place but still not too bad.

How cold is it outside when It "surges" and is low on power?
I have never heard of a 6.0 filter being put on and/or working on our trucks... Is it just the stock 6.0 filter and intake pipes or what?
The outside temp is in the 40s when the surging occurs. I am not aware of a whooshing that accompanies the surging.
I've installed the 6.0 filter housing using a conversion kit that I got at the dealer. I can look up the part number, but I think that this is a fairly standard mod.
i think your feeling the EBPV closing up on you..it will do this till the truck temps come up.if you have a muffler on your truck you may not hear the woosh....best way to find out is to un plug the EBPV and give it a try...Chase (superduty4x4) told ya how to do that in post #2...the EBPV is there to aid in faster warm ups..it plugs some of the exhaust (robbing power) to put a load on the engine..in return it makes the engine warm up faster..i deleted mine as a warm up valve and now use it as an exhaust brake..i got annoyed with it..

Search for the "Romps" and see if that is what you are experiencing.
And I think you're talking about the AIS intake, right?

I'd agree with the EPBV. The surging is probably occurring at that RPM in a certain gear where the increased back pressure is causing issues with the spot the motor is at on the HP/TQ curve.
100k is a good time to make sure all the fluids are in good shape. When was the last time the fluid was changed in the tranny, differentials, radiator? Have you changed the serpentine belt?

I'm pretty sure he's referring to the AIS filter, which is a common mod for the 7.3
I'd swapped out the EBS and opened the tube last night just before starting the thread and WITHOUT doing a test drive...
DOAH!
This seems to have significantly cleaned up most of the surging problem. I can still feel some slight up and down of the RPMs: but it is in the 10's of RPMs, rather than the 100's as before, AND available power when driving in a cold state (40degF) seems to have increased significantly. WeeHaa!
Air cleaner housing is stock 6.0 w/a Ford manufactured adapter to properly connect to the turbo intake pipe.
As indicated before all filters and fluids (including T-case and both diffs have been changed). I've swapped the CPS and added a HPX...
What else is starting to get old and creaky on these birds at 100K and should be checked or swapped outright?
I am familiar with the AIS, just never heard about the 6.0 filter working on our trucks.
It was introduced for the 6.0 and the retrofit was made to address the crappy stock filter setup that had sealing issues and dusted a lot of 7.3 turbos costing Ford a bunch of warranty $$$$ Another reason we harp on that crappy setup here.
One of the snap downs on the stock air cleaner housing was broken off and the other was cracked. There was duct tape residue along the joint where the previous owner had tried to seal it.
The dealer that did my prepurchase inspection did not notice (or perhaps did not mention) this. I caught it after the deal was closed.
Since it sounds like the airbox was leaking, check your turbo compressor wheel... If it ingested a lot of dirt, it will have rounded edges=bad. My truck had its air filter housing (stock) just kinda loose when I picked her up. You could see dust down the intake, but the wheel was sharp. I don't have barely any blowby so I think I'm good... just something to check out...I would pick up a spare AIS filter though as few places I have come accross have them, and they are kind of expensive for that fancy Donaldson filter media...
