Here’s my problem. In the last month my truck started idling erratically but not all time. Sometimes it would die on me while driving or sitting at a stop light. Sometimes it will also lose power for a second then it will pick back up. It’s like the engine cuts off then kicks right back in. I figured it was the CPS because I used to have an old black one that died on me about a year ago so I ordered a blue one (I think it’s the international one) online and that fixed the problem. I had to take my truck to the dealer for some other unrelated service and while I was there they took my blue one out and put in one of the new ford gray ones because of the recall. The truck ran great for quite a while after that then started this problem. I went to the dealership and bought another gray CPS and put it in. Seemed to fix the problem for about a week or so then started the same crap again. Getting codes P0541 and P0603. I do have a programmer so I figure that’s were the 0603 is coming from. Not sure what to think about the 0541 since my AIH is intact and still wired up. Is there anything else that could be causing these problems? Should I get another blue one from international? Any help is greatly appreciated.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
It does point to the CPS. I would go back to the dealer and inform them that they owe you a IH CPS. The 0603 code is common for chips. A far as the 0541 I'm not to sure, especially where you still have the AIH intact. Try to clear that one just to see if it comes back.
I tried the argument with the dealer and they won't budge as usual. They say that because of the recall any time a truck comes in without the ford gray one they have to replace it. Personally I think that's a bunch of s**t but what can ya do? I located two different CPS's from International online. There's a black one with part number 1876736C91 and the newer blue one with part number1807339C92. Any ideas on which I should go with? I used to have the blue one as stated before but I didn't know there were two different CPS's offered by International.
There's much debate on the blue one. It is used in a different engine and changes the timing on our trucks. Some folks like it, some think it's a bad idea. The black one is the one designed for our motor that wears the International badge in the medium duty trucks.
I'm not sure how the heater would make the truck stall while driving, since it's only supposed to be for reducing smoke while idling when cold. The only other thing I know will make the truck die (but won't cause idling rough) would be chaffed wires in the main engine wiring harness. That's the one that tends to rub on the drivers side valve cover right below the square box, or rub against the bracket on the back side of the box.
Chris, do you know the specs on the two IH CPS's? What effect does each one have on the engine?
No, I don't know the actual specs. I believe the blue CPS is from an IH 6 cylinder engine and the black one is from the IH T444E (aka 7.3). Since the blue one changes the timing slightly, I would assume it has a stronger magnet to make the unit more sensitive, but that's just speculation on my part.
Thanks for the link, Chris. I need a new cps, have the recall one from Ford but after reading about how reliable it isn't, I don't want to put it in. I guess I will spend the money and get the IH one. If it does give better economy, it will pay for itself someday.
