I was working on my 02 Super Duty diesel this weekend, and since I was going to have the doors open for an extended time I decided to unhook the batteries to keep the batteries from running down. When I disconnected the neg cable on the left side battery and started to go to the right side to unhook that one, the neg cable I just unhooked on the left side came loose and went back and touched the positive post on the battery. Obviously there was an arc that got my attention and I got it away from it very quickly, but now after that my power windows and radio will not work anymore. I have been reading on here about the GEM causing these items not to work if the voltage is too high or too low. I checked my battery with a load tester and they check ok and are fully charged. I checked all of the fuses and they are all good. Did I fry the GEM? Is there something else I should look for? I am mainly a wrench turner on Chevys and am a little out of my element working on a Ford. Anybody have a direction to point me in??? Thanks!!!!!!!!
You could try resetting the GEM to see if it helps. Remove the bolts holding the fuse panel in place and you can turn it enough to unplug the GEM. Let it sit for about 5 minutes, plug it back in a try again. Worth a shot....Did you also check the fuses under the hood in the main boz? (Next to the master cylinder on the drivers side.)?
Nevermind, I found what it was. The instrument cluster fuse was blown that I had overlooked before. Obviously I am glad it wasn't something much more expensive!!!
You dont have to unhook the batt. these trucks have a batt saver switch on them. that cuts off the power to the truck when the battery get to a certen level

It is always nice the even when Murphy's Laws try to step in, they can be foiled sometimes. Nice find!
i really didnt want to read through my owners manual for something im pretty sure wasnt there...if there is something malfunctioning and is drawing power from the battery there is nothing to prevent it from completely killing the battery
yup you guys are right thats what I thought was a battery saver went through the manual cover to cover not a word about a battery saver in there.... wouldnt save a direct short anyway
Don't feel bad Ken. The first time my interior lights timed out I thought I had blown another fuse. (I was working on one I knew was blown at the time.)
