Ive got a 94 f150 with a stock 302 with 5 speed and single exhaust that runs verry well what can i do to give it a little more pep what would flowmaster and duel exhaust help much or maybe more fuel pressure or a special chip if possible any ideas thanks
The best and cheapest thing I did to my 302 was advance the timing to 14 degrees btc. It gave it noticeable pep and didn't cost a thing. Other than that long tube headers, with dual exhaust would help out some, a good tune up (plugs, wires, cap, rotor, coil, air filter, fuel filter, pcv valve) if you haven't in a while can help quite a bit. Changing the gears if you have 2.73 or 3.08 or 3.31 to something lower (higher numerically) would help a lot especially if you have oversize tires, but mpg could suffer depending on current set up.
There are many options for a 302 some cost a lot some are cheap, some help a lot some do not. These are just a few off the top of my head. You can always do things like cam swap, 1.7 roller rockers, head work, and other internal things but that gets kind of involved.
The 302 really needs at least 3.55 gears even with stock tires. I don't know why the hell Ford even bothered with those other gear ratios like 3.08 and higher (lower numerically). Those gear ratios are useless with overdrive transmissions. Don't fool with a chip. Its a waste of time and money. A good free flowing exhaust will help. If you prefer to run single instead of duals run 3 inch pipe. Its cheaper and flows about as well as duals. I agree about basic tune up parts etc. You could change all the fluids. That may help with performance some, but it will help avoid repairs later.
Will the '94 302 really bebefit from advancing the timing to 14*?? would you have to run premimum fuel then??
It made a very noticeable improvement in my '91. i don't have to shift out of 5th to take hills anymore. And no you don't need higher octane fuel unless you have engine knock/pinging. advance it to 12, take her for a spin(preferably with decent load on the engine, uphill or with added weight in the bed), if it's not knocking try 13.. etc. I think most people get around 13-14* adv before engine knock.
I'm getting ready to have my 302 bored to a 349, I had the same question and thats what my bud reccomended, and he works at the shop. I do have doubts though!
