v10 powersteering pump change. Easy?

My steering pump on my v10 is making noise, and my truck is hard to turn, while idling. It wont turn at all with the brakes on while idling. Can I change the old pump, put the new one on, fill it, and go? Or do they need to be bled somehow to get the air out? Will any pump off a ford truck modular engine work, or does it have to be off of a v-10. My truck is a f-250 2002 4x4 Superduty. Thanks.

I believe all the Super Duty pumps are the same between gassers. Pull off the old and put in the new.

Fill with fluid and turn the wheel lock to lock a few times. That will bleed the air (if any) out.

And do it the first time WITHOUT the engine running and the wheels off the ground. Just to keep the foaming to a minimum

I think you will need pulley puller.

I was wondering about that. I read some other threads about modular p/s pumps on here, and a couple of them said that you have to pull the pulley to get to the mounting bolts? I dont know, i havent looked to close at mine yet. I would assume if I buy a brand new pump I'll need to keep the old pulley anyway. Alot of them that ive seen listed come without the pulley. Thanks for the responses guys.

Mine did that right before i bought it, it needed a new idler arm. Fixed the problem and has never given me any trouble since.

I know the 4.6 modulars do not require the removal of the pulley to pull the pump. One of the bolts isn't easy to get to but can be done in small increments and a little patience.

You can get a puller to use for free at Autozone. Just leave a deposit till the puller is returned.

Correct. Even easier is to get a new Teflon sealing ring for the PS hose connector, remove the PS pump hose that's in the way so you can remove the "problem" bolt permanently. PS pump removal takes all of about 3 minutes after that.
Ford for some reason chooses to use that 4th bolt on some applications, and doesn't on others. Makes no sense, but alot of what Ford does makes no sense.

I bought my $19.99 puller from harbor freight. Worked great to remove the pulley from the old pump and install it on the new pump. The most difficult part will be getting the hoses off of the old pump, I had to cut some cheap wrenches in half and whack with a hammer to get them turning. The pulley will not need pulled until you have the pump off of the truck, there are only 3 of the 4 bolt holes used, make note of which hole is not used on the existing pump. I'd suggest two oil catch pans and even then you will have to clean the garage/driveway afterwards, when draining the pump after the hose is removed the oil hits and runs down all sorts of suspension parts.

Whatever you do, buy a GOOD pump, don't buy one from the box stores, get a motorcraft rebuild or by some miracle a new one that isn't obsecenly priced.

Good luck with the work.
