I own a 2002 expy with a 5.4 liter engine. She stays in the garage most of the time, but we use her on long trips 100 to 500 miles a few times a year. We also use it to pull a small (2000lb) boat. My question is, would I see any benefit (mpg increase) from a cold air intake kit, and if so is one brand better than another? I currently have a K&N in the stock air box. No other mods are done or are planned. Thanks.
My experience with the K&N CAI as a stand alone modification on both a 5.0 and a 5.4 is that is did nothing except make noise. No change in mileage, maybe a small perception of some extra grunt. I think you need to make more mods to really get any benefit. You can feed the motor more air upstream, but without anything downstream you are probably still flow restricted. I won't try it a third time without other mods.

dont waste your money, save your 250 plus dollars. I had one on my 07 expedition and it actually lowered my miles per gallon, got K&N to buy it back, plus it makes your engine or at least my 5.4L have a loud drone to it. I replaced it with the drop in K&N and all is good.
your best bet in getting more power and mpg, would to purchase a tuner such as sct excal 3, 5 start tuning has been very helpful in trying to get sct to get a programmer for the newer expeditions, but they have one that will work with 06 and earlier.
if you decide that you want the k&n cai, i have one i will sell you cheap. i bought it for $200 off of ebay new. i used it for about a month, maybe two, then supercharged my engine, so i have no use for it. it has been stored in my house since. lmk if interested.
Thanks for your input guys. I will save the 250.00 keep a lite foot on the right pedal and keep driving it the way it is. I also have a 2003 f150 2wd that I have found I can get another 1mpg just by taking it easy around town.
