Engine swap

Hello all I have a 97 f350 and I would like to rebuild a engine and put in it. I have seen alot of 7.3 cores around but most are from a 99 and up. My question is will a 99 or newer 7.3 work in a 97? I'm not sure of the differences. Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

yea but i think there is one hole in the block that you will have to plug for i believe something to do with the fuel pump.

What about the injectors and the high pressure oil pump are the 99 ones different? Or will the 97 engine components bolt right up to that block? Thanks in advance!

from what i understand all the 97 components will bolt up. you do want the hpop from the newer one. the newer injectors are split shot and i think you need the idm out of the newer truck to run them. but one of the gurus will be on here soon with a definate answer

Biggest difference will be the holein valley and lobe on cam for the fuel pump will be missing on the 99 engine. The hole will be have a freeze plug but the cam doesn't have a lobe to drive the pump. The HPOP might be the 17* pump and it should just be left on the engine. If you want to though you can put the 97 pump on the 99 front cover. Injectors will be split shot in the 99 and the IDM will be fine but you should get different programming via a chip to run the split shots correctly. Other than that all periphals will bolt up to either engine.

In 99 they changed the mechanical fuel pump and the mechanical vacuum pump to electric ones. Like TJ said you will have to use the electric fuel pump because your missing the cam lobe to pump it. For vacuum you could use the old belt driven, or get the electric vacuum pump from the 99. The turbo is different also. Don't expect to get a huge downpipe on that 99 once it's in your OBS.

I guess if your planning on doing as rebuild you could just pull the freeze plug for the fuel pump and use a 97 cam. Many people go from the mechanical fuel pump to an electric. I think thats only necessary for big power.

If your just looking for one to rebuild, there are no major difference that I know of in the block itself.

Thanks for the replys. On another note is the 99 - 2003 block, hpop, injectors and such the same and interchangeable? Thanks again everybody.
