i run what ever costs the least. the PO of my truck built the engine to run on what ever eh could find when he was traveling, so i am good with almost anything that burns...but i bet you would be fine on 85....

"Modded" trucks having the fuel tank mounted at the rear under the bed, in front of the rear axle.
The usual tanks that are used are from various 1965/73 Mustangs.
These galvanized steel tanks are constructed with an upper and lower section spot welded together, forming a lip that protrudes outward from the tank 1/2" to 3/4" around the circumference.
This was the same method Pinto fuel tanks were constructed.
The 1971/75 Pinto fuel tank fiasco:
When rear ended, the Pinto's fuel tank was pushed forward, the lip of the tank hit the rear end, splitting it wide open.
1000's of ppl died...burned to death. The 10's of 1000's of lawsuits that resulted cost Ford billions of dollars.
Somethng to consider before installing a Mustang or any other fuel tank in that location. A location no automaker in their right mind would consider...especially after 1975.
I agree that a Mustang tank, because of the way it is built, is not a very good option for the rear of these trucks, but to say that is not a good location is IMO just not right. Ford themselves put the tank in the rear of the F series truck right up until 1996. I have yet to hear of a problem with any of these trucks turning into barbecues, and I have seen some with the tailgate pushed right up to the back of the cab.
David.
I was considering changing my tank from an in-cab to an under body tank. But, with what I've seen, I'm going to leave it where it is. It would be nice to have that little space for extra storage, or speakers (which I would install ones that big anyway)but that's an awful lot of work, for not much gained. I'll leave the tank, and install a bed toolbox instead!
Are you talking about the ones that go along the bottom of the bed? I don't have those, I was just thinking about one that sits on the rails, like my '06 has.
this one came from a guy here in town, that didnt want it and sold me everything for the cost of a replacement bed side panel. no rust and is even the same color as my truck
i was wondering what that lil door in the side of my bed was. i thought it was added by previous owner. its all rusted out right now andits not even enclosed....just adoor that leads to the insideof thebed.
Yep, factory storage! It's a neat idea, but was a terrible area for rust. I don't know if you can get all the parts from the restoration companies or not.
