Sound Like a Good Buy to You?
Hey guys,
First off, im new to the super duty area. Life Long Ford fan thats currently stuch with a dodge . I used to have a ranger, then i traded my inlaws for their Durango, and they sold my Ranger and gave me the money (pretty sweet deal other than getting a dodge out of it).
Anyways, the Durango is on its way down the ****ter. with about 170k on it, needs tranny rebuilt, lots of electrical, and it lost what ***** it had to start out with (probably needs an engine rebuild as well)
So now im looking at an F250. Its in pretty damn good condition. Its a 2000 Powerstroke 7.3l extended cab, long bed with a shell, 2 wheel drive. Has a banks turbo back exhaust, and i think a couple more upgrades, and only 90k miles on it. The guy is asking 10,000 for it, but hes a good friend of my inlaws, and they think i can talk him down to 8,000 pretty easily.
Its more than enough, actually its probably overkill, for what ill be towing with it. I have a 23' boat, and a 2 horse trailer w/tack room and storage. other than that it will be my daily driver as well.
Im driving up this weekend to go check it out in person, and give it a test drive. What are some things i should look out for? This would be my first deisel. and do you think its a good deal?
thanks,
John

Well you're in good hands. Make sure you scroll a little further down the main forum listing and stop in on the 99-03 7.3 section for any motor related questions you have about this (or a different) truck.
I would start by taking the lid off the air filter box and taking a look inside the lid and tube that goes back to the turbo. You want to make sure the filter box doesn't have any broken clips or ears that has been allowing dirt around the filter which can cause $$$ damage to the turbo and engine. You can also remove the oil cap while the truck is running and check for blowby. Some smoke is ok, if it's puffing like a steam engine, that's bad.
