Sway in my 1995 F150 with the 6" lift, this is my first big truck! not sure how to judge> all I know is I seem to be all over the road!!LOL Looking for any thoughts or comments and pics are always cool of course!
When I had my 84 F150 on the road with a 4" lift/33s I thought it drove very nicely, in fact a few of my friends who drove it complemented how tight it felt and nice it went down the road. I would start checking for loose front end parts.
well, The front end has brand new upper and lower ball joints, tie rod ends just passed a safety check last week. I put on a dual stabilizer shock kit also.
I built the truck from bottom up, it is the first ''big truck '' I have built. There is a rear anti sway bar that is not installed right now, the links from the frame to the bar are too short, I was thinking of cutting and lengthening them, but not sure how much longer they should be??
Yeah OK BC Hauler, I was not sure if all these trucks were even equipped with this rear sway bar! IsYours?? I have had mixed thoughts from different ford guys if these are on all the F series trucks, and how much they really do.
I don't see a sway bar, especially on the rear, making the truck run all over the road. I'd forget everything that has been done to it, jack it up to releive all stress from the front end, and start checking parts (including the new BJ's and the tierod ends. Put some pressure on them with a prybar. If everything feels good, let it down, move it around a little to settle, and have someone move the steering wheel while you look and feel for any linkage problems. Check the damper in the steering column (if these trucks still have them) too. Then, if everything is tight, check the freeplay in the steering wheel and adjust the steering gear. If it still sucks, borrow someones wheels and tires that their truck drives good with and try them on yours. You won't have a cadillac, but you shouldn't have a deathtrap either.
My F350 has no sway bars, it wanders as the steering box is wore out, I have a new one to go on it, but Meyers made their plow frame go over the lower bolt and after plowing from 95 to now I dont think im a get the plow frame off, so Im a have to torch an access hole to the bolt, but back onto topic, just do as everyone said recheck everything, and then ck the box, Im sure thats where the prob is if it wasnt replaced already.
My 95-150 4x4 was dangerous when I first got it, whole front end shot. I don't have mine lifted, 33x12.5 on stock rims, slight rub at a near-full turn. I had almost the whole front end rebuilt at a good shop, it has no sway bars. It was better but no awards. The mechanic told me I should find a sway bar for the front only, don't need the back and the steering box was so-so but OK for now. Then I noticed after a while the front driver tire was towing out. So I took it to a different shop known for it's front end work specifically for another opinion. He adjusted several things that were just out including the steering box and steering bushing plus re-aligned the front end. He told me I don't need any sway bars, the truck was nice and tight, that any slop was all in the steering box and shaft and if I replaced that it would be real good. I also just finished putting new Gabriell Ultra (white) shocks on the whole truck. Overall it's good, but I'm not going to go any more on this one, 247,000 and what it is it is. So I'm inclined to believe you have steering issues, and are your shocks new? Cheers, Dave
