Speedo is bouncing up and down while driving. Replaced ABS sensor on top of diff. Checked fuses, they seem fine. Really hoping it isn't PSOM. Can you still get them at the dealer? If I get a used one, is their some way to jump the mileage up to my current specs?
The only other thing I can think of is wiring. Is it possible to check the ABS sensor plug with a multimeter?
If I broke a tooth on the diff ring gear, wouldn't I feel it in driving?

You should be able to check continuity of the wires between the plug at the rear and the other end with an ohm meter.
The vss reads a tone ring mounted next to the ring gear, so if it was missing a tooth you wouldn't feel it in the drivetrain.

You can get a new PSOM from the dealer and even have it dialed with your mileage but they are big $$$. I got lucky when my PSOM went and found a used tach cluster (my old gasser didn't have a factory tach) that was within a few miles of what my truck had on Ebay. I paid more for it, but still cheaper than new ($125). I think I still have the name of the place I bought mine from if you want it. The other thing you might be able to do is buy a lower mileage cluster, pull the VSS out and rig something up on an electric drill to run the mileage up to where it should be- I can't guarantee that would work but it might be worth trying.

Yeah, if you could look up the name that would be great. I am hoping it is something electrical because I don't have the cash for rebuilding the diff or buying a new PSOM right now.
I think what he meant was to unplug the wiring from the VSS and check for continuity there, if you have none then there is a wiring problem. The place I bought mine from:
If you can find a cluster from another 95 diesel with close to your original mileage. If you can't, just find any 92-97 cluster with the mileage you are after and you can swap the speedo/PSOM piece from the new one to your cluster.
there is a way to test the PSOM. i think you press the secelct button and hold it and the speedo arm will move all the way to 95MPH back to 0. if the goes smothly its not the PSOM.
id check on that VSS a little more. i had a hell of a time trying to get mine fixed.
make sure its seated on the axle tight. take a wire brush and brush off all the grease and grime where it seats.
check the wiring could be a broken wire. thats what happend to me.
make sure you got the right VSS i know they made a few different ones over the years.
and last i would change the rear end fluid. if its old fluid metal shavings could throw off the speed readings giving you a jumpy speed reading.
also while you have a read diff cover off inspect the ring gear for flat spots or missing teeth.
if all those check out i guess its the PSOM.

Like Rodney says ,,look closely at the wires , on mine ,it was a broken & corroded wire ,inside the insulation ,,jumped when I hit a bump in the road ,,
Also , the surface the VSS mounts to ,can get rust build up and raise the VSS too far from the tone ring...
I don't think rust build up is the problem, but I used a wire brush and clean it off. When do the 'reset' test on the speedo, the needle moves smoothly over to one side and back, so I guess that is not the problem? I think it is the pigtail for the sensor. I had to shift the needles on the multimeter in different positions on the pigtail and got different readings each time. Will get a replacement off a junker tomorrow.
did you test the 2 wires going to the VSS up the frame a little? one of my wires was broken inside the plastic sheeth so i had to take a ohm tester to see if the wires were good. it was still kinda touching so it would short in and out all the time giving me the "jumpy" speed reading.
also, have you pulled out the new VSS to see if there was steel shavings on it? if there is alot change ur fluid! metal will also throw off the reading alot!

No, I just tested at the pigtail. As far as I know, the wires aren't broken further up the rail and I don't know if there is a factory splice anywhere along it, without actually cutting the wires and testing them.
I pulled out the VSS to brush down the hole a bit. I put new fluid in the diff this spring, so I don't expect any shavings. This is the sensor Ford gave me. I don't know if it is magnetic like the last one, but they said it is a new replacement to the old magnetic ones.
If you checked the wiring at the pigtail and its fine you could still have a wiring problem- have someone wiggle the harness at different spots along the truck and see if you get any weirdness. If not its your PSOM for sure.
Got a replacement pigtail off a junker truck. Looked to be in much better shape than the one I had, but speedo is still jumping. Do the wires for the VSS go straight to the back of the gauge cluster? I was thinking maybe I would test the entire line for continuity by jumping the lines at the pigtail and testing the ends at the cluster.
If its the speedo or tone ring...this is looking to be a real financial pain in the ****.
In happier news, I found a good small junkyard that has about 20 Ford trucks from 1990-2000, that I can now go to for parts. Fellow said he is getting a OBS diesel in next week for parts...tan interior, so I can now replace my broken pillar trim pieces. Also said the truck has the stock Alcoa rims on it, for $450. Thinking that is a little steep for old rims.
As far as I know the wires to go straight to the back of the cluster. If you have to trace them out clear to the front- they are easy to identify because they are twisted together.
