I find the numbers very useful when going to the wrecking yards looking for specific parts. Especially smog parts for my 1981, (But thats a Different forum.)
You can also cross reference the numbers at some aftermarket dealers as well to get what you need.
It's also very handy to know the numbers when doing NOS restorations for shows. Why do you think places like DC sell Autolite Decals to stick onto the Motorcraft Oil Filters and Batteries? It may come down to the oil filter making your truck either best in show, or 53rd place.
It may not be important to some, but it may be useful to others.
