I have a 2001 Ford F-150 4x4 5.4L and just recently I have been encountering a weird engine problem.
When its cold out (say below 50 degrees) the truck will not idle while cold. It will start and then immediately dies. In order to keep the truck running I have to keep my foot on the gas pedal and keep the RPM's up.
I have no CEL's, K&N FIPK, and Exhaust. That's it. It has had a fuel filter at 115k miles (currently 144k) and I don't know the previous maintenance history of the truck.
My guess is either IAC (idle-air control) or some spark plugs. However, I have no hesitation at any speeds. So that makes me think it's not plugs!
sounds like an IAC... But the iac on my expedition is attched to the intake on the drivers side near where the TB is... I would try clanin it. After a few gleanings you can buy a new one if it keeps comeing back. To properly clean it take some break parts cleaner and soak it, then use a small screw driver and work the valve back and forth, if it is getting caught up then you should just replace it, also make sure there are no vaccum leaks.
