We just bought a new Toy Hauler and we are adding some airbags along with the WD hitch (the trailer tongue weight is just under 1500 lbs). My actual question is for anyone that has installed airbags and the in cab gauge / controller. Does anyone have a picture of the location of the gauge and controller in the X. I was also trying to find a good location on the dash or I was considering the back left corner just behing the spare tire. I really don't think I will have to adjust too much while driving after I find a good bag pressure.
Watch your tongue weight. If you look at your receivers weight restriction label...you will very likely see what I see on mine.
500# MAX tongue weight in weight carry mode (i.e. no WD hitch)
1250# MAX tongue weight in weight distribution mode (i.e. with WD hitch)
I have no idea what will happen with 1500#'s of actual tongue weight to our receivers.
Just a heads up.
BTW...there are really only two choices to get around this. Eckhart hitches in southern California...but THEY have to physically install the hitch.
The other option is to put on a Pull-Rite 20K hitch which is an amazing sway control hitch but offers I believe 2000# of tongue weight. The problem with the Pull-Rite is it bolts BELOW the factory receiver and costs over $2,000...but IMO it is the BEST anti-sway control hitch out there...and this coming from someone that pulls with a Hensley...
Sorry for the side bar...but I wasn't sure if you were aware of the tongue weight limit...I know I spent many hours at the scales to get my tongue weight from 1400#'s down to below 1200...simply by shifting cargo...and now I always load that same way (give or take a little)...
Thanks Joe, I did notice that and was planning on running to the scales too. We are loading jobsite tool boxes in the back so I hope that helps. My friend that has the same trailer says that the tongue weight on his was closer to 1100. I hope that is the same for our trailer.
Here's where I put mine. Low, just to the right of the go pedal.
Personally I wouldn't put it in the back because I have adjusted it while driving. I've been on some crappy highways and adjusting the air has smoothed the ride out.
Thanks Scottf4444, that would have been an ideal place for me too but I already have a scanner and CB radio there and then next to that I have my break controller. I was thinking that I could mount it on the tranny hump just below my break controller or next to the aux power port if there is enough room. I guess I will have to just wait untill I get the gauge and switch to see where the best place will be. I'll post pictures next week when I get everything installed; and of the trailer.
Check out the general Super Duty forums here on FTE and search for F650 and dash; there are a couple of factory molded dash fronts for the bottom portion of the dash that have space for switches and gauges, which would be perfect for mounting what you describe.
It weighs in at just over 9000 loaded. I do see 4.30's soon if I can find a deal! I foresee alot of miles on the trailer in the future, can you believe we have gone coast to coast three times this year alone! Next year is already looking just as busy.
