Actually the manual and automatic appear very similar. The major difference is that the auto. has only one shift lever at bottom and of course the different drive range selector under steering wheel. They also have a safety switch on bottom lever which allows starting in only PARK or NEUTRAL. Remember IF you find one the 56 column is shorter than the 53-55. They are very hard to find as only a few trucks had Fordomatics. Also check the length of your steering box/shaft from end to end I think a F-600 could be longer than a F-100,250 or 350.
I suspect that there may be slight length differences. I think I can make whatever changes needed to accommodate it.
I didn't know the 56 was shorter.
I am also thinking that maybe I could use a 57-60 also. (the gear indicator is the same for those years I think.) I also think the diameter of the steering wheel is still same with the non power steering models.
I would rather not use an Ididit column just to stay original as much as possible.
