E4OD Questions

Hey everyone. I am giving my E4OD a maintenance run, but I want to treat it with some extra love this time around. I want to put on a deep dish pan, shift kit, and use synthetic fluid. I wanted your experienced advice on what synthetic fluid to use. The transmission shop I spoke with said they have use Mercon V, which I hear is not good for these transmissions, can anyone attest to that? I also was considering Amsoil, but i have heard horrific stories from E4OD owners saying it caused more damage than good.

Heres the shift kit I wanted to use:
Transgo Performance E40D - TransGo Performance Shift Kits - summitracing.com

And the pan:
TCI 498010 - TCI Aluminum Transmission Pans - summitracing.com

Again, I don't know what type of fluid I can use so that would be very helpful, Thank you!

Any fluid that says MERCON V on it is the right fluid for an E4OD. It used to be bad, but Ford changed MEROCN V in 2006 to be compatible with E4ODs. I recommend Mobil 1 synthetic ATF.

As for the pan, the only advantage they have over the stock pan is that they look better. If you are doing it to help cooling, you're wasting your money. It won't help. Spend the money on a bigger cooler, that's how you keep a trans cool.

haha yeah they do look better. I need a new pan so i figured going bigger would be better. But i will just buy a $125 Ford racing one, that way i get my "cool looking pan" out of the way and a new fresh pan. I like the Mobil 1 ATF suggestion, what might that have over Amsoil?

Mobil 1 has a MERCON V rating. AMSOIL does not have any rating, they just state that the fluid is for use in a trans that requires MERCON V. Mobil submits fluid to Ford for testing, AMSOIL does not. Ford certifies by issuing a MERCON V license that Mobil 1 meets Ford's requirements.

I have a 94 F250 4x4 E4OD and have been satisfied with Mobile 1 since a change at about 60,000 or so.

I tow an 8,000# trailer maybe 20-30% of my miles, thru temps in the teens and well into the 110+ and lots of nasty hills.

Just my experience,

Jim Henderson

To be honest tho I am very frustrated giving money to Mobile at all, I hate oil companies firstly, but at least amsoil doesn't screw the American people over while there bathing in our money every day, but I will need to get over that if i decide to use mobile 1. Why on earth would Amsoil be so expensive if they weren't any good, why isnt there any controversy over this if they arnt actually qualified?

Thank you Jim as well for response.

I didn't say their fluid is bad. What I said is that they don't have Ford (or any other automaker) approve their fluid. I don't know why.
