4.0 Swap?

Hello everyone! I am new hear and I got a 88 Bronco II and I am looking to do a 4.0 swap. I have a lot of questions, first of what would I need for the swap? Second how hard is it and can it be done in a weekend? I was first going to do a 5.0 swap but that's just way to hard and a lot of down time. Really all I am looking for is about 50 HP and 65 TQ. Now I have a 4.0 bored 30 over with aftermarket heads that came out a 95 Explorer would that work? And for those who have already done it what kind a increase did you see? Thanks everyone.

Donor vehicle for the motor and complete wiring harness with CPU.

> Second how hard is it

I will let you know, starting one myself

> and can it be done in a weekend?

No, two maybe.

> Really all I am looking for is about 50 HP and 65 TQ.

You might make about 30 more horsepower, real world, over the 2.9L. The biggest difference is in torque. No replacement for displacement.

yes

I've got a question to ask you guys.. hopefully you guys took pictures of the engine bays before any work was started so you'd know what to look for. I started this swap about a year and a half ago and pulled the motor and had everything pulled out but I've forgotten everything! Is there any way that someone could link up some "before" pictures of both the 2.9 and preferably the 4.0? It'd be a great help!

RoamerB2, are you still in need of pictures? I know this is an old thread but I have a '89 BII and a '92 Explorer in my drive way still intact if you do.

Thanks for your help but I've got it all swapped up! I took a few drives to the junkyard and found some that were still together. I even got the a/c hooked up but it needs to be charged.

My only problem after the swap was that I found out the tranny went out, so I had to have it done up. Should be getting it this weekend! I'm super excited!

On the '84/'85 BIIs - you will need to change up the fuel system a little for the EFI. The more popular donor vehicles are the '91-'94 Explorers, but you may be able to get the 96 engine and parts to work. Not sure what the differences are that would affect the swap.
