Hey folks - pulled a Ford AM/FM radio out of truck in a junkyard, cleaned it up and it works great. I have read as many threads as I can about OEM radios, but may have missed one. Anyway, my radio is type D8TF (as labelled directly on the unit), which to my understanding means it was made for a 1978 truck.
My issue is that when I go to mount in my dash (I have two bezels, an original with the radio cover-piece and a DC repro), the face sits way too high, as if the ***** are in the offset configuration.
Should that be? What does the fourth character represent?
Rockstone, I tried to follow your link, but it seems to be broken. Do you know if that link still up? I really would like to check it out!
Unfortunately, I don't know what year truck it came out of. I was just so surprised to see a radio in a junkyard truck I didn't pay attention.
FYI, I also have a Ford OEM radio for a car (the type with the offset face), and if you put them side-by-side, the **** posts are in the exact same position relative to the controls (height-wise), which surprised me.

I just tried it and it worked for me. Here it is again,
1973 to 1979 Truck Factory Radio compatibility
If that doesn't work check a thread started by 1973FordF100, titled "Original 1973 Radio. It was just running last week, I have no idea how to link you to it.
1973/79: The face plate is the same, the mounting bracket is the same for all 1973/79 F100/850's, 1978/79 Bronco's.
So the D8TF radio should work, right?
Yes...if it's the correct radio for a F Series truck or '78/79 Bronco.
D8TF refers not only to F Series trucks, but all trucks including Louisville's (LN Series), C Series tilt cabs, W Series "over the road" tractors.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So the AM/FM radio might be this...

Exactly right. Not only does the "D8TF" have to match (Truck), the ***** and offset have to match as well.
Ah - I think I understand. Thanks for all the help guys. Turns out I had indeed seen the site Rockstone posted and had printed out that page at one point.
So I think the take away is (correct me if I'm wrong) is that the information on "Right Radio" vs. "Wrong Radio" at the link posted by Rockstone is overly-simplistic. You can't just take a radio with a T in the third position and any number in the 2nd position and expect it to work. There are differences within that general set.
So help me out - if that is correct, I'm not sure I've seen a foolproof method in any of the threads I've read how to make sure a given radio will mount in my F-series truck and sit well-aligned in the bezel. It may be out there and I missed it. Do any of you guys have a source or link? I looked in my '76 original shop manuals and didn't see it in there.

It has to be from 1973/79 F100/350 or 1978/79 Bronco.
However, I just noticed in the parts catalog that Ford made a special bracket to adapt 1980/91 F100/350/Bronco radios to 1973/79 F100/350's.
It also worked with the 1976/80 Granada/Monarch radios. The only problem is...where to find the bracket?
It was only used for this application, and no Ford dealer or obsolete seller has one.

Yes the site is simplistic, and was basicly designed to keep people from being taken advantage of on ebay. There were sellers on ebay passing off the car radios as ones that fit our 1973-1979 trucks.
The Criteria for the Correct Radio is this.
A: The first Position in the number MUST be a D
B: The Second position must be between 3 and 9 .
C: The Third position must be a T
After that is confirmed, then you need to make sure the Radio Shafts are the same length, and are centered of the radio dial.
All that criteria has to match. Not Just the one part.
Speaking of radio differences, I have a question about two OEM Ford mid 1980s radio/cassette players.
The radio/cassette player I am referring to is the manual (non-electronic) version with a round **** on each side.
The difference is, one has "PREMIUM SOUND" written in fancy script on the faceplate and the other doesn't. Other than that, they look EXACTLY the same. That is the only difference I could see. What am I missing? Are they interchangable?

Yes they are interchangeable, however....
The Premium Sound Radio has a seperate amplifier, and uses The Ford Premium Sound speakers.
