My 300 is a manual choke. It hasnt been hooked up for some time because ive been driving my other truck. Well, i sorta destroyed the tranny on the other truck so im gonna have to start driving the 300 again.
I remember when id start it up it was a pain. It would take a few tries then itd finally start. Then it would run badly until it warmed up. When it was warm it would start/stop/run beautifully.
So my question is, how much of a difference is the choke going to make? Its gonna start getting cold soon so i really have to replace it now. So is it going to make a huge difference or will it still be a pain in the butt? Im hoping it will be a big difference, the truck is a bit loud so you can imagine when im sitting outside a friends house at like 2am revving the motor to warm it up is not the most appreciated thing.
I used to be in your boat. It wouldn't even stay running until I got it warmed up, and then it purred like a kitten once it did. Fixing the choke solved a lot of problems.
The choke is really important in cold weather. It keeps your gas/air mixture at a level a cold engine can operate with. If not, it runs like you say.
Another thing to check is for intake or vacuum leaks. Accidentally sucking in 80 - 100 degree air in the summer where its not supposed to be will cause your engine to just not run its full potential. But sucking in 0 - 30 degree air where its not supposed to be in the winter is going to cause some major running problems. You might be dealing with that too if it runs really bad when cold.
Definitely something to get on now. Winter repairs suck.
It depends on where the choke cable is frozen up. Is it something some soaking of WD-40 might fix? Personally, I would find it easier to just see where it's frozen up and free it than replacing the whole line. If it hasn't been used in a while, it may just be some rust.
If he has a manual choke, it should be just a **** on the dash that you manually push/pull to open/close the choke. If that's the case, it's either aftermarket, or '78s had that option.

Thats exactly what it is. Its a little black **** that runs behind the glove box. Its right next to what used to be the "hillbilly cruise control."
