Posted this on the transmission forum, too, but thought I'd try you guys as well.
I'm new to any transmission work, but I'm looking for a C6 to rebuild this winter to eventually put in my '76 F250 with a 390. I have found a C6 for rebuild locally that came out of a '66 Thunderbird with a 390, are there variations from year to year that would limit me from using this transmission if I bought it to rebuild?
Any insight as to what years/vehicles that would have a transmission suitable to be a simple bolt-up replacement for my current transmission?
My current C6 is ok for now, but I would like to gain the experience of rebuilding and be prepared if/when my current C6 spits the bit.
I couldn't say for sure going from car to truck but the FE cases are the same. You would probably need the shifter too. If the tail shaft isn't the same you would have to take the truck trans completely apart to remove the tail shaft. That being said you would be better off just rebuilding what you have if the tail shafts would have to be switched.
Summit list rebuilt kits for 66-76 c6 and then 77 -up so the internals are probably pretty close. I think when I installed a shift in my 73 tbird c6 there was some different directions for some years but pretty close. Like Mark a. said the shifter and tail shaft could be different. Some think to check out before hand. My best advice is clean everything very very well. Good luck.
