Question Wild request

I need a picture of the factory tachometer for the 53-55 ford big jobs. If anyone has one of those tachs they are not using I would be interested but I really need to see what the dial face looks like. I have had no luck locating a picture of the dial face of one. Thanks for any help.

I think my dad has one he got with some parts he bought a while back. If he does I'll go over there and take a pic for you.
Tim.

Big Job tachs

Here are a couple pics I have. There was one on ebay last week, but it sold. These are in 56's, but they look the same for all 4 years.

Good morning Joe. I thought the tachs would all be the same but now have some reservations on that. The dial face on the air gauge is different and matches the 53-55 gauge cluster. Got that out of the C800 you found for me. I won the one on Ebay. I wanted the adaptor that was with it. I had been looking for an adaptor since I started this prodject and never even saw one. The same problem I am having with the tach, have never seen an original factory install of a tach in a 53-55. I now know that the air gauge was different and think the tach probably was also. The responce to this question is a reminder of how rare the Big Job trucks are. The little trucks are all over the place. It is like everybody has one. Ganted most have been butchered but still look kind of like they started. I need someone that has a 53-55 with the original tach to show up here. Thanks for the help.

Contact FTE member big job. His name is Sam. He has the working Big Jobs that he rebuilds and uses them as his work trucks. He would likely have a good original example. I can't think of any one else that has a complete Big Job, with air. I figured you would be going after the tach onthat auction. I thought about the air gauge, but I said screw it. I will use the one I have, as well as the tach i have, since they are both original to 74, and look fairly vintage any way. The tach is perfect, since it is a diesel tach, and it has roughly the same RPM range that the old Y-blocks had. Peaking around 3000 RPM, and making most of it's power down low.

Here's something that might cause confusion.

Ford replaced the tach used 1953 thru 1955 with the 1956 tach (B6Q-17360-B) for use as a service part replacement.

Service part replacement: parts sold over the counter at Ford dealers.

So it's possible you might find a 1953, '54 or '55 with a 1956 tach in it.

In the early 1960's, Ford offered two accessory tachs for these and other trucks...more variations.

Oh great, so it is reasonable to assume, that a person may NEVER know what whether or not the tach assembly is indeed correct, unless, they are lucky enough to find that needle in a haystack occurance that has an unaltered perfect original unit in it with original factory part numbers still legible.

Uh...that's another problem, because....

Thru 1953, Ford put the actual part numbers on some parts, ID numbers on others, most, however, were not marked..

After 1953, only ID numbers are on some parts, most are not marked at all.

Ford also used rubber stamps to mark these numbers on gauges, clocks, speedo heads...and tachs, so if was there in 1953, it prolly isn't there now.

And these ID numbers sometimes make no sense at all on 1950's Ford parts because Ford used odd ball prefixes, examples: BCAA, TBAV, BA, BF, FDU, and BM (I kid you not!).

If I didn't have the 1950's Ford Master Cross Reference Catalogs, I'd be SOL on FTE, because when I see prefixes like this, I have no klew!

Ah----I don't or possibly aggree because My trucks are originals, my two 54's and my
1956 tack and air gauge is are total original and are identical maybe part numbers
changed in 56 I can't see any difference, to me the tack is fancy and its to bad the
air gauge is kind of plain jane. Im probably the only one on the planet that my father
bought the F800 and the F6 new, so nobodys been under the dash thats the way it
came from the dealer who is long gone. I gave you a message C700 about where they
go and wm joe provided the photo and you can just see the air gauge in one pic.
sam we will keep whatch on EBAY

All I know is the 1956 tach replaced the tachs used 1953/55. I don't know what the dif is, or if there is one, because the parts catalog doesn't say.

There's only one general illustration of the tach...it just says 1953/56.

Ford is notorious for updating 10's of 1000's of part numbers every year.

Trying to keep track of all these old/new replaced part numbers is a royal PITA!

Old parts catalog part numbers are way out of date, and in order to post part numbers here, I have to research thru myraid update catalogs to see of the numbers have been replaced or not.

Y'all have no idea how much time and effort this takes. How many partsguys do you see on any Ford car/truck site doing this for these old piles? I only know of one.

I don't get paid a cent to do this scheiss either...I do it because I have a passion for these old rolling piles of misery!

Hi me again I just went out and took photo you will have to go in my gallery and look
around to find these photos. I simply can not put photos in with this text. If you find
them, you can see a 1956 tack is identical to the 53, 54, 55s. Also put the air gauge
which they are all the same. I forgot one ill put it in now. That is a later air gauge out
of the sixtys which look nice. (original did not work correctly)

Have done the research and for anyone that might be interested. The 53-55 original ford tach matches the dash gauges. It has white numbers with the stars in a circle and so does the air gauge. Niether of the 53-55 gauges have any red or green. The 56 brings a big change and the tach uses the red and green, the numbers are green and the air gauge also has green numbers. Anyone needing a pic please PM me, send me your email and what you would like a picture of.
