i have a '76 f100 and we have a leak from what i've been told it's the rear main seal but i don't know how to begin to fix it and i want to know if there is anything i should check before i get waist deep in a project i didn't need to do in the first place.
Welcome to FTE! I agree with the advice said above - first check for things that mask themselves as a rear main, but if it is the rear main, you're in for a project. Even if it's just the pan seal, you're looking at at least lifting the motor to get the pan out, and depending on the rest of the seal, removing the crank and disassembling the rotating assembly which means putting the motor on a stand. Your post says that you have no idea what to do about it, so again I'd agree with the above advice that if you don't know how to fix it, either don't fix it or take it to someone who can because it's not a beginner project. Depending on how bad the leak is, a lot of people just live with it. I don't like that I'm telling someone who has come to FTE for advice to just "live with it," but I'm really trying to save you time, frustration and money in the long run. Looking out for your safety as well.
