My new to me Ford E4OD trans has a mind of it's own. The converter locks and unlocks at any time while just cruising along at about 45-55MPH. A trans shop suggested the brake switch can do this action. The converter seems out of balance some times. Is the converter bad and getting worse? The shifts are great. Passing gear works great and back great. The noises, out of balance and lockup are not good. A local parts store quoted about $390 for a "good" E4OD converter. Frank
first you need to have it scanned for codes
if it has the original pcm it does not have the ability to flash the o/d cancel light to indicate a fault has occured it can only store codes
the brake light switch can cause it if it is sending power to the brake light circuit
the vehicle speed sensor can cause it the tach sensor can cause it
but the most likely item is the FIPL (throttle position ) sensor
Also, pull the harness off the trans, and clean the connectors - I had an intermittent lockup disconnect at one point, once I completely lost lockup due to fording some still water, so I cleaned the harness plugs and filled 'em with dielectric grease ad I never had a problem ever since.
to scan it connect the scanner , turn the key on , and depress and hold the throttle at wide open and perform the code retrieval test
it is called key on engine off on demand self test
and hold the throttle open until teh test is complete or you will recieve a false FIPL code
