Great site. But I've noticed it has little on 2000 F-150 V6. I have a 4.2L V-6, and just now have gotten a job, wanting to spend some cash on it. Would it be a bad idea to try and convert this truck from a 2WD to a 4WD, if not? Is there anything, any type of complete kits, they would give me everything I need to get it installed. I am not any kind of expert, that's why I'm asking. And if there isn't any kits, I need to know everything I would need to get the job done, and appro. how much it would cost!!! Thanks alot....
Your talking about major suspension, drivetrain and frame modification. You would be MUCH better off selling your new truck and buying a 4 wheel drive. No body makes kits to do it because it ain't meant to be done. I looked at converting a 73 F-150, but got smart and bought a 79 F-150 4x4.
You would need, a tranny, transfer case, driveshafts shortened, a front one made. If you want a solid axle, you have major work of cutting out factory designed suspension and replacing with your own. This involves a lot of welding, cutting, and fabricating. If you can't do it yourself, you can't afford to have it done. Brake mods would have to be done. Kiss any warranty on the truck goodbye. Kiss any implied liability by the manufacturer (such as the Firestone tire incidents) goodbye.
With the money you spend doing this, you could either have one good downpayment for your new truck, or pay a year of payments.
Sell your truck. Buy a new truck (or used one.) I mean, your truck is only 2 years old and you want to try to stick a front axle under there. Buy a V-8 while you are at it. You couldn't be that attached to the truck, I mean you could have only owned it two years. Not to mention you will destroy the resale value of your truck.
