So my truck has been blowing coolant for a while. and according to my edge insight the oil temp has ben getting prity hot if i run it for over 30 min like 60 deg over the collent temp i have evn seen it 80 deg over collent temp loded. So i asked anround and found a mod frendly shop and called them. the service manager there former deasel tech i beleave. told me to take off the radeator cap and put a ruber glove on it to see if it would fill up with air. SO i did it when i got home and when i gave the motor some throtol it sucked in the glove and when i let off the glove blew up and just waved at me. So I geuss that means that there is a compromise in the collent system somwhere but would the glove not do the oposit? blow up under RPM and suck in under decelaration?
If it is still under warranty, put your cat back on, unload the tune and take it to Crossroads Ford in Morganton, Exit 100 on I-40. Ask for Jake to work on your truck. You won't be disapointed and you will most likely have a problem free truck when he is done. Trust me, it will be worth the 45 minute to an hour drive for you.
If you want to confirm to yourself you have a headgasket leak, buy the Uview Combustion Leak tester. UView: Product Detail Cost around $50 and only takes a few minutes to 100% confirm combustion gases in your coolant. You can use it more than once and charge you friends a few bucks to check their engines to get your money back :-) This is also one of the accepted methods in the Ford Service Manuals.

I agree with buying the Combustion Leak Tester. For $50, it is a great analysis tool and cheap insurance. It is the only true way to tell if the HGs are shot unless you have continuous white smoke out the tailpipe or it pukes continuously no matter how you drive it. My X pukes occassionaly when my boost goes over 25 or the EGTS go over a 1,000°F for a short period of time. Everytime it pukes, I do a combustion gas test on it. I have 73,000 on it and no exhaust gases in the coolant. I recently went to WV and it overheated on I-64 pulling a 10,000 lbs. trailer up Sandstone Mtn. just outside of Beckley, WV. I knew I blew the HGs. Let cool down and refilled the cooling system. Got it home and did the combustion gas test. All OK.
IMO I think the 6.0 cooling system design is not sufficient to sustain the 6.0 under rated towing conditions. I also believe that a lot of so called failed HGs, due to puking, is really poor cooling system performance and not actual HG failure. The results of my X puking occasionaly and passing the exhaust gas test points me to that conclusion. Also, after it pukes and cools down over night I check the next day to be sure there is some pressure in the cooling system when I remove the degas bottle cap. If there is no pressure, then I would be worried that I have a cylinder or cylinders full of coolant due to a leaking HG.
One ? I have. How many of you guys who have had the HGs replaced, due to puking, have actually seen the failed head gaskets? I would bet not many. I believe a lot of HGs have been replaced due to puking when it was really the cooling system not doing it's job. Just my opinion and you know what they say about opinions. Yup and most of them stink!
Just let Chris (the diesel tech) know and I'm sure a freeze plug might end up where it wasn't intended
Hi Matt,
Another fellow Western NCer here, I wanted to say thanks for putting your SCT 6.0 tune Archive on your wesite. That is very nice of you to do that. I am enjoying testing some of the tunes as a first time diesel owner.. all I can say is DANG!!! One of your tunes almost gave my wife a heart attack yesterday :-)

Well got my truck back today with new head gaskets ARP head studs, new oil cooler, and a blocked off EGR. Ran it up the mountain on the way home where i usually get some puke and 250 deg oil.. And my oil temp was 200 max and no puke under the hood when i got to the house.
