i bought my 97 f350 bone stock. it always had a loose steering box. now with 40's on it, its gotten alot worse. it vibrates at like 30 mph. really really badly too. the tires were recently balanced with equal, and this is not the first set it has done it with, so i know its not this set of tires.
i have a dual stabilizer running from my frame to my draglink, which is how this specific kit was supposed to be set up. im getting an OEM one for the axle tube to tie rod tomorrow. and since i work at a parts house, im also getting a new gear box and will be looking into new bushings. until this vibration/steering issue is fixed, the truck stays parked. anyone got any other ideas for me?
Ball joints, any and all steering linkages. Look everything over, a little here and a little there will add up to a lot by the time you get to the tires.
I don't know if the 350 has one but I had an F-superduty I was working on that had steering wobble and all I had to do was replace the track bar, it only had a little bit of slop, but that's what did it. Hope that helps
What type od spring and shackle configuration do you have?
Are you still running a front swing shackle? That trac bar idea is a very good one, and if it is not tight, it will cause a wobble.
Is your vibration actually steering related? Can this vibe be from a poor driveshaft angle in the rear?
I would guess track bar related too (assuming the shackle is still in front of the axle.) Death wobble will shake the truck so violently that you will have to stop, or at least slow down until you are barely moving. If this isn't the case, then it just might be something out of balance, like the driveshafts.
the vibration is coming 100% from the front. anything over 25mph the whole front left of the truck bounces. i have a friend at work that used to work for verizon and he said their phone trucks were all f-superduty 2wd's and they had alot of trucks with a similar issue, and once a steering stabilizer was installed, the shaking was eliminated.
yes, i still do have the factory shackle setup. not for long though, gonna go with the sky reversal kit soon. as far as the trackbar goes, by buddies cummins has a bad trackbar, and ive experienced the shake in that truck. its alot different from what goes on in my truck, but ill still check it out. gonna go crawl under there now.
well, now im waiting to do the steering box and stabilizer till this tuesday. im gonna price out some TRE's at my work. its pretty nice working at a parts house. i get everything cheaper and i ahve the ability to install now, pay later lol.
when i was under the truck i noticed that the bushings are all squashed to hell, cracked, and spitting out grease. the steeringbox needs replaced anyway, so hopefully a combo of all these things will get everything tightened up again.
i dont pull over when i get the "death wobble" i just let off the gas and pull the steering wheel towards one side. it usually makes it go away. but a set of kingpins are on the to-do list
i do that, but it just shakes when it goes back to center.
i just had the truck inspected in the end of july and i was told the balljoints were solid. im gonna check em when my buddy and i do the work tomorrow. this sucks.
