ATF question

Want to change the fluid in my 05 Excursions 4R100 transmission and Transfer
case and the manual says to use MERCON and notes that MERCON and MERCON
V are not interchangeable, I want to use Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF and it indicates that
it is suitable for; Ford*MERCON, MERCON V, MERCON: so wanted to know what yea think
should I use or not?

Yes, you can use it. Since your owner's manual was printed Ford discontinued MERCON and changed MERCON V to be compatible with all transmissions that used to use MERCON.

Mercon V also has a friction modifier in it so if you have any shuddering, it might take care of it.

May be a dumb question but is the 4R100 and E4OD the same?

They are very similar. The 4R100 is an evolution of the E4OD.

MERCON V is now the right fluid for both the E4OD and the 4R100.

I'd rather change all the fluid, but MERCON should mix OK with the newer MERCON V.

Is there a difference in transmission oil quility between what walmart sells compared to the local parts store house brand? Are there any standards they all have to meet? For instance is there any difference between Motorcraft Mercon and Autozones house brand?

There is a standard for all fluids that have any MERCON V or MERCON SP license. The license is only granted after they submit fluid to Ford for testing. If it doesn't pass the tests they can't say it's MERCON V fluid. They can skate around it like AMSOIL does by saying they recommend their fluid for transmikssions that require MERCON V. AMSOIL does not submit fluid for testing, so who knows if the fluid is compatible or not.
