Supercrew and bed length
Will Ford be offering a longer bed for 2002 models. Also has anyone had problems with capacity of the 5' foot bed? How well does the bed extendor work?
The 5.4L is nice for the extra pickup you get over the 4.6L that I had in my Expedition. In the short time I've had it, it's showed it'll be a gas hog, but not quite as bad as what I was experiencing in my Expy. I'm averaging 11 in the city now, over the 9-10mpg with the Expy, but the truck's not broken in yet so mileage might get better as some people have claimed. I brought this up for general info, but none of us truck owners bought them expecting great fuel economy.
The extra seating is more important and what most current buyers I've spoke to are looking for over the loss of a foot in the bed area. The 5.5' bed is doing fine by me so far. With the tailgate down we picked up a dozen pieces of plywood a few days ago and it hung over by about a foot and nothing was lost on the way home.
This truck is meant to be the answer-all for people who want an expedition and an F150 at the same time without buying 2 trucks. That's a reasoning I used when ordering one. I loved the Expedition 70% of the time, but there were times (30%) when a truck would have been handy. I got tired of borrowing a pickup for stuff that wouldn't fit in the back of the Expy.
If you're truly concerned about bed length than maybe an F250 should be in your future. I don't see Ford offering a longer Supercrew due to their marketing surveys which they claimed showed that the Supercrew buyer was looking for a Full size truck that they might still be able to fit in a normal size parking spot or home garage. If this truck was any longer, you could probably forget putting it in the average size garage.
The bed extender: I have it for the convenience of having small items stay toward the back of the truck where a shorty like myself can reach in and get something without having to climb into the bed to get that one thing that slid to the front of the bed......And you know what I'm talking about. I realize a cargo net would be cheaper, but the extender can also hold a 1/2 keg of beer up nice and steady :>)
Still hopin' you end up getting one anyway..... You won't be disappointed.
