What New 2 BBL Carb for 302 in my 1973 F100?

I was going to get a Chilton catalogue and take a shot at rebuilding the carb on my new 73 F100.

It has a replacement Ford 302 with a two barrel carb. Engine was swapped around 1980.

The repair shop said the motor will run as long as they are standing there spraying stuff in the top of the carb, but I wouldn't be able to throttle it with the gas pedal?!?

They are telling me I need to replace....not rebuild.....the carb because the flaps are frozen up with rust presumably and he said that if I tried to rebuild it, it would leak air bad..

Does this sound right to you??

If so.......what's a good option for a close to original-type two barrel carb? I don't want to replace the intake, so that's why I just want to go back with something basically the same..

Thanks

or call sean murphy induction.

if you want to have a cheaper route, just get a stock replacement from the auto parts store.

I was reviewing the page in the LMC catalogue that had carbs and there seemed to be an endless amount of variants....even having multiple 2bbl carb options within the same year and engine type....

Is this so standard of a part that I could walk into a Napa Auto Parts store and they would just have one sitting on the shelf??

There is no such thing as an optional 2V carb.

The reason why there is more than one 2V carb is because of the myriad different applications.

F100/350's.

From 1965 thru 1979, Ford lists over 200 2V carbs in the parts catalogs..just for F100/350's.

The carbs are listed by the size of the engine.

Thru 1969, Ford offered different carbs, because some of the trucks have a manual choke.

The carbs used on trucks with M/T are different than the ones used with A/T.

302 carbs internally have different jets than carbs used on 360/390's.

Some carbs have a electronic dashpot, some do not. Some have no dashpot at all.

Altitude also made a difference.

The 2V carb used on 1970/74's have a choke pull off diaphram mounted to the air horn, This was not used before 1970.

Emission requirements is another reason. Some carbs were for CA vehicles only.

However, Ford only offered ONE 2V carburetor repair kit from 1963 thru 1974. The kit fits cars & trucks and comes with extra parts that apply to 1970/74's only.

D4AZ9A586A .. Carb Kit (Motorcraft CT499D)

After 1974, there are, at minimum 7 different carburetor kits. Most of this has to do with emissions requirements and all the electronic stuff used on these carbs.

Then...there's the dreaded 2V VV carbs used on some 1977/79's. VV = variable venturi. A carb that never performed correctly, and is a mindboggler to fix.

Many have been scheiss canned, but must be retained on CA vehicles because we have smog inspections here.

The vehicle must have all the original smog crap intact...or it won't pass inspection. There's no longer a waiver here. It has to be fixed it so it'll pass. If not, you're SOL!

I post this link on every replacement 2v carb thread I see.

Holley 0-4412S - Holley Model 2300 Carburetors - summitracing.com

I put one of those on my truck after trying 3 different rebuilt ones with no better results. From the minute I bolted that thing on my truck has ran great. I love that carb and it's brand NEW!!! They do have a 350 CFM model available but I went with the 500 because I plan on upgrades down the road.

Thats the carb I wish I would have bought. I just went with a rebuilt direct replacement 2V with thermo choke, which I ended up converting to a manual choke anyway.

A carb would have to be in very very bad shape in order to not be able to be rebuilt. A reman is still going to cost a bit, might as well buy a new one like the holley.

I don't understand what the shop is saying by the "flaps" being froze up, unless they are talking about the throttle plates or the choke plate, which I don't see happening. Some shops opt to replace a carburetor rather than rebuilding one, because honestly, fewer and fewer shops these days can do it. I'd rebuild it yourself, or if you are set on replacing it, beware of parts store remanufacturered carburetors (and by beware, I mean don't go that route at all). The Holley 2-barrel is a good carb, I just don't think you need to go a route as expensive as that because the Motorcraft 2 barrel is just as good when built correctly, and much cheaper to get ahold of (you already have one).
