I looked up a remanufactured engine for my truck on motorcraft.com and got part # LGB177RM. I called the powertrain call center number listed on the site to find out what was included. When talking to the service rep, I tried to confirm the Motorcraft part # with him and he said I needed to use the long part # when ordering from a dealer. The long part # he gave me is F4TZ 6006 CRM.

I went to Y2K Ford Discount Parts and typed in both numbers and got the following:

Motorcraft # LGB177RM
MSRP: $2259.10
My price: $1948.48
Core: $400

Ford # F4TZ 6006 CRM
MSRP: $2671.43
My price: $2304.12
Core: $600

What's the difference besides the obvious $350+ in price? I called my local dealer (Team Ford in Vegas) and they provided as about much help as usual - none. The guy told me the Motorcraft part # wasn't valid. When I told him that the online retailers showed it as a valid number, he said it was probably cross referenced some how to the ford #. When I asked him why there was such a difference in price, he said he doesn't know. Does anyone have any insight on this?

 

I called the powertrain service center back and got the answer I was looking for. The motorcraft part number is a lower-level build. It doesn't include:

Oil Pan
Timing cover
Valve covers
Water pump
Crank damper
Spark plugs
Intake/exhaust manifold gaskets and mounting hardware
Spark plugs

 

What I am finding is that traditional motorcraft part numbers are being superceded by 'new' ford part numbers - mebbe they switched systems or something. The old part number would be hard to hide in MySQL which is where most databases are heading....

On parts that carry both Ford and Motorcraft numbers there is a complete different pricing structure from Motorcraft than from Ford. These parts are always available cheaper from Motorcraft jobbers than from the local Ford dealer.
I'm not sure if the Motorcraft engine and Ford engine you are pricing are the same but if they are I would expect the price to be less from Motorcraft.
It would be worth your time to look into it farther.

 

So the Ford engine includes all of this? For ~$350 more, I would definately go this route if it was for my truck. Which size engine are you pricing?

 

why dont you look a 5.0Ho from an explorer with GT40 heads ? its better.. thats the one i got for a project im doing

 

I question if the exploder would have gt40 or gt40P heads.

makes a diff on the headers you have to adopt (not insurmountable, but not bolt in)

Numberdummy: I sent a message to sivlerstatefordparts.com and asked if I get the same price in person as on the website, and the anwer was no. Additionally, they won't allow me to order from the site and pick up at the dealer either. So not only would I have to pay shipping, I'd also have to pay the 7.75% state sales tax. If I go to the dealer in person, I'd save on shipping, but would have to pay very close to MSRP and the sales tax. I haven't done the figures, but it would probably be a wash in the end.

brown 4X4: The quote is for a 5.8L roller engine. Agreed that the extra $350 is probably worth it for a nearly complete and sealed engine, but not sure if I can swing $2700 plus shipping both ways.

52 F3: When I called the powertrain call center back, they told me that the Motorcraft part number cross referenced to Ford Part number F4TZ6V012 BRM. Both the Motorcraft number and Ford number are the same price on Y2K parts. I did some more research on the Motorcraft site and found that Ford offers four different build levels:

1. Motorcraft Classic Remanufatured (base # 6V012)

2. Motorcraft Enhanced Remanufactured (base # 6V006)

3. Ford Remanufactured (base # 6006)

4. New engine assembly (base # 6007)

According the powertrain rep, all the remanufactured engines have the same basic long block, but some just have a more complete build than the others.

DJdemon6696: Call the powertrain call center at 1-800-392-7946 and they will help you with the part numbers.

All in all, I think Ford is the best option for remanufacured engines if you can afford it. They have a 3yr/1000 mile warranty redeemable at any Ford dealer and transferrable to new owner. They have a no risk core policy that was defined to me as "you can have a rod sticking through the block of your core". And there's no limitations on commercial use as with most other remans.
