Couple Questions

Ok question number one...How hard is it to take off and put on a soft tonneau cover? I'm thinking of buying a topper for hunting season but I don't want it on all year so I would obviously have to take off the tonneau cover and I'm just wondering how hard this would be to swap the two as needed?

One other question, should be pretty simple but do you guys know if stock wheels and tires from a 2002 F150 will fit on a 1999 F150?

Thanks in advance.

not sure about the tonneau cover but as for the wheels just look at the sticker on the door of your truck to check rim size if they are the same bolt patern i don;t know why the rims wouldn;t fit

you also need to think about what you are going to do with it when you take it off. but im sure you will need 2 people to take it off.

and yes, the rims will fit. im pretty sure the 99+ f150's had 14mm studs and the 97-98 f150's had 12mm studs.

I have the Extang classic Platinum tonneau Extang Classic Platinum Tonneau, Pickup Truck Bed Cover Tonno: Tonneau Pick Up Bed Covers, and one guy could put it on and take it off. It is held on by allen-bolt-driven clamps, so it wouldn't be so bad to undo. The topper would be your main problem.

If you just want it for hunting season then its not too bad. But if you plan to take it off and put it on constantly, then it can become a pain in the butt. I got better mileage with my cover off, but it is nice cause it keeps everything dry.

The topper/tonneau cover switch would only be at the beginning and end of waterfowl season so it would only be twice a year. It would just be nice to have the extra room for deeks but I don't want the topper on all year, but want to keep snow out of the bed during the winter. I will have to look at the tonneau cover and see if it at least looks easy to uninstal.

I will have to check a little more on the wheels, sounds like you guys think they will fit though?

I wouldn't see why they wouldn't fit. I think I remember hearing somewhere that our trucks will fit any wheel size from 16" up. (Obviously we aren't gonna be running semi tires here) So I think you will be fine.

I could be very wrong about this, but I've got a feeling I'm running 14mm bolt-hole wheels on 12mm studs (which should be able to be done if the wheel is hub centric instead of stud centric). It's not ideal, but it works.

The dilemma would be if he was asking to try to fit wheels from an older 12mm truck onto the 14mm studs.

Everything I just wrote, though, is based off of information I read here and not me putting eyes on the parts. I've never seen a side-by-side comparison of the claimed 12mm vs. 14mm wheels, but I can say that I think my wheels' bolt holes seem too big for the studs.

My truck originally came with steel wheels, but the dealership I bought it from had a set of 'take-off' Ford aluminum wheels (from a truck they didn't know the year of) and asked me if I wanted them instead, so of course I said 'Yes.' I didn't know about the danged change until much later, but I've run the truck with them for about 40k miles now.

I've been doing some searching and it sounds like the 97-02 bolt patterns were the same, sounds like there was something different in 03 and the 04 and up are obviously different so it sounds like they should work. Rethinking the whole topper thing now, it's hard to find a used one in black. And painting them would cost more then the actual topper so not sure what I'm going to do in that category. Anybody in ND or MN have a fiberglass topper for sale in black for a 99 F150 shortbox

Its very possible that you are right gamma. I just know that my girlfriend has a 97 and we got her some tires off of a 2001 and they fit fine. So they may have changed it between 01 and 02, but I am confident that 97-01 is the same. I assumed that they didn't change it but I could be wrong.

GAMMA is right, truck started with 12 mm studs, then switched to 14mm. newer rims will fit the older studs. after 2004 they switched to a 6 bolt pattern, so they are not workable.
