I bought a used truck yesterday, the one in my sig. Put a new starter on it, it has some admirable oil leaks, probably hpop o-rings. (Yet to be determined.) So, I was driving down the road today, about 50MPH, when suddenly I started losing power. Just kept going slower and slower, but seem like the motor was running and no idiot lights came on. (It's and automatic.) Then it suddenly dawned on me that maybe I had run out of fuel, even though the fuel gauge said "little less than 1/4 tank." So I switched over to the other tank, but by this time I was down to about 25MPH or so, looking for the shoulder and the idiot lights WERE on. Cranked and cranked for about 15 seconds or so at a time. It would catch like it wanted start, but no go. Let it set for 30 seconds or so then try again. Starter was still turning strong, so I checked the fuel filter, there's fuel in there. Tried a few more time with no luck, then called the tow truck. Got it towed to a shop, they were closed. Tried to crank a bit more now that it was on relatively level ground instead of a 15* angle to the right, still no go. (The other tank is completely full, by the way.) Sure hope it's something simple.
Get it scaned and start form there but like bigdog said I would bet it is the Cps. It is located ont the front of the engine on the down low. It is not hard to replace just one bolt. But before jumping to things and spending money have it scaned. You said it threw a cell so that means there are codes.
When I said "the idiot lights were on" I meant that they all came on like they do when you first turn the key on. I thought it was because the motor had died. Do you mean that there will still be a code? Are these scanners worth buying or are they really expensive?
Not to be a smart a$$ but have you checked the oil. If you just bought it the PO might have let it run too low. Check all filters. Mine did that one time and a new fuel filte fixed it right up like magic.
May be time for some new owner maintenance on it.
If the CEL didn't light there should be no codes.
It's full of oil. Because of the oil leak, which I had not got around to fixing yet, I keep a close eye on the oil level. I was planning to do all that today, but I guess not now.
When I crank it, the oil pressure say 0 for the first few seconds, then jumps up. I did not think to observe the tach. There was not any smoke during cranking that I noticed. I will observe the tach when I get to the shop this morning. What should I be looking for?
Just got back from the shop. The tach moves while cranking. This is a local shop here in Burton. Small, but he does have a scanner. He said it would be later before he could get to it. He stays real busy.
Well, apparently I didn't try cranking it enough. The guy just kept cranking until it finally started. He let it run until it purged all the air and it's just fine now. I was afraid of cranking on it too long lest I run the batteries down or damage the (new rebuilt) starter.
Shop fees: $20.00
Towing fees: $95.00
Hope I learn enough before I run out of money.
Hey, here's a question for you -- I have two tanks, one is supposed to be 19gl. and the other 18.2gl. (Not sure which is which.) I obviously ran the rear tank dry, which put me at around 17 MPG for that tank full. But when I filled it up today I could only get 16 gallons in, and that was to overfull. (That would make my mileage real close to 20 MPG.) Anybody have an idea how that could be?
there is a plastic pickup in at the bottom of the pickup tube that breaks apart.I can only put 12-14 gals in mine because of this.I am going to put in a bronco tank so I am holding off on fixing it till the swap
