I just got a call from a friend about his 99 Superduty diesel, so I referred him here and told him I would get it posted up to get an answer forthcoming for him. A 99 powerstroke, as mentioned, that is having a strange problem on the humid (almost foggy) 40-50 degree mornings we have been having here lately. He says that at hard throttle or deceleration, it runs great. But when you hit around 70 and ease off the throttle to an even out cruise speed, he gets a hissing noise from the area around the turbo, and consequently it runs like crap. I am thinking that there is a cracked O-ring or something somewhere. I have a 6.9, so I am not as familiar with the turbo on these motors. I am sure someone here will know exactly what is wrong, I just could not give him the answers he was looking for. Any one with any thoughts, please post up. I am gonna call him back and help him get registered and all so that if he has anything to add he can post up. Thanks a million!
His EBPV is shutting. Tell him there is a small plug on the turbo that he can unplug that will de-activate the EBPV. It's not a necessary part, its function is to close when the engine is cold to help it warm up. Unplugging it will not harm anything. Hang on, I'll find a pic.
What he needs to unplug is the plug-in just above the blue dot in the center of this pic. There is a wire lock tab that you flip up, then just pull the connector out. Its harder to see when all the intercooler piping is in place, but still fairly easy to find- right in the center of the valley at the bottom of the turbo. A flashlight will help to find it.
Make sure to point your bud to the 99-03 7.3L forum so we can help him spend his hard earned money on mods on the truck!
