Mopeds

Why are mopeds allowed on our roads? These people are riding 45 /50 mph even though they arent suppose to yet seems the cops arent stoping it. These people have no insurance yet they cause wrecks and damage property leaving everyone else to pay the bill.......and some of these people even try TO USE THE FRIGGIN CELL PHONE WHILE DRIVING,,,,,,,,,,

They aren't allowed on interstate highways. On local road surfaces, ie around town, regardless of speed limit, they're allowed...just like you can ride a bicycle on the side of the street.

40 or 50? Damn, that's a hell of a moped. Most 50cc scooters have trouble pushing that.

I can do 40 mph on a bike - if a Rottweiller is chasing me.

I say the more the merrier. 75 mpg = more gas for me, less traffic jams, can't cause much damage if they hit anything. Maybe if everyone had one the demand for crude would go down. Lower demand = lower price?

Mopeds are meant to be ridden in-town for the most part. There are some mopeds that are 125cc or 250cc that can be ridden out of town or even on the interstate because they will do 60+ mph, but the 50cc mopeds that most people buy dont do over 40 mph and should only be ridden in town.

I've never seen a moped over 50cc. In most states, mopeds are limited to under 50cc (most are 49) with a top speed of 35MPH. Anything faster or larger is a motorcycle and subject to all the laws and regulations of motorcycles. I don't have a big problem with them in town or other low speed locations but some get in the middle of the road on a 55MPH highway and block traffic. I think Tenmnessee outlaws them on any road with a speed limit greater than 45MPH (sounds like a good idea to me).

Right, you are required to have a motorcycle licence to operate one and they are subject to the same laws as motorcycles, but they are still mopeds.

I agree. As long as they dont hold up traffic Im fine with them, but you have people who are only thinking about gas milage and dont care if they hold up traffic.

My main concern is if a moped pulls out in front of a car and the car swerves or has to slam on breaks or loses control and has an accident the moped would be the cause YET HE HAS NO FRIGGIN INSURANCE.....Also many moped riders have already shown they have no respect for traffic laws(getting DUIs) and they think they can ride any way they want. They are a menice. And if by chance YOU hit one you better believe the moped guy (if hes alive) will demand YOUR INSURANCE INFO. I cry UNFAIR!

Im sure there are some are a menace, as are alot of car drivers too. What seems unfair is your generalization of them.

Of all the scooters I have seen ripping around around here, they all seemed to be alot more careful then anyone. I can only presume this is because they know that one wrong move by them could make them mincemeat.

I always wanted to turn a mountain bike into one of these scooters under 50 cc.

I admit some people use them like they should. The fact remains though that even a good driver can cause an accident, even someone on a moped yet I think it is fair to generalise that 100% of them DONT have any liability coverage . You could litigate againist them for years and still not get a dime. Trying to collect from an at fault driver who has full coverage is hard enough. so go figure

I own a 1987 Honda Elite moped, 49.9CC. My son owns a 1985 Honda "Iowa" moped, 49.9cc. Top speed on both machines is under the legal limit of 35 mph.

Your statement that "... it is fair to generalise (sic) that 100% of them DONT (sic) have any liability coverage" is, quite frankly, anything but intelligent. We BOTH have six-figure liability coverage, specific to each machine. While it's not a legal requirement in this state to have liability coverage, as responsible drivers we consider it prudent to have it. The cost is only $75.00 per moped per year.

I think you're "painting with too broad a brush", there, dude. As long as two of us have liability insurance, it is mathematically impossible to state that 100% don't have any coverage.

Around here it is mostly kids riding them and if you are under 17 you have to have some sort of insurance, also the speed limit on a moped is 25 mph but I know for a fact that a Tomas moped will pull my big frame around at 40 mph and there are kids here putting a 70cc engine kit with a pipe and passing cars at 55mph.I saw a gang (yes gang) of kids on mopeds the other day and I sware it was the wild bunch they were riding three side by side down the road now thats what will cause problems for someone at least a car will win in a fair fight

I can see both sides of the "debate". I've ridden a bike for years (750). Question is . . A scooter or a moped ?? A scooter is like a Cushman - a moped is a bicycle with an engine so that you can MOtor or PEDal. It's nice to know just what you're looking at or talking about. I've seen scooters that can easily keep up on the freeway AND it's any idiot in traffic / driving anything that bothers me.

I ride a bike (650, George has me beat) daily. If you ride like an idiot, natual selection will soon follow. It's self-regulating in a morbid sort of way, but hey, it's your choice! The unfortunate(?) thing is that a lot of people don't understand this.
