Just curious as to what the diff in hp is b/t the 04,05,06,07,08, 5.4L's.
I drove an 08 the other day and it sure felt pepier than my 05.
Are the all 300, or just the last couple years?
THANKS
I believe that they were all rated for the same power and torque from Ford. Now with that said, I know they tweaked the motors after the 04 model year.... basically some software magic for better throttle response and such. I know my 06 felt quite a bit faster than my 04.
A lot of what you're feeling is the way the tuning is. Not more WOT hp on the dyno, but a pedal that is "lighter" in feel. The same can be accomplished (plus horsepower/torque) with a custom tune. This isn't good for mileage and its part of the reason Ford decreased weight at the same time they changed driver demand (pedal position) to actual throttle plate position. The throttle plate still doesn't follow the driver demand like a physical linkage would but they made it somewhat closer, plus the "slope" is changed. By that I mean that X% of pedal push translates into Y% driver demand seen by the computer was changed.
Imagine a traditional throttle with a linkage. You push the pedal X inches and the throttle plate travels Y fractions of an inch. Now, change the length of the arm on the throttle (leveraged distance) by shortening the end where the pedal is or lengthening the end where the throttle wire connects and X inches of the pedal creates more Y fractions of an inch on the throttle plate. Makes it feel peppier but it hasn't gained any horsepower. That, and more, to a much finer degree, is what can be done now in software with pedal slopes and driver demand.
What about the gear ratio ? Are you sure the trucks driven had the same gears ? Mine has 4.10 and makes a big difference in "peppiness" at the expense of higher rpms on the highway and worse mileage of course.
05 5.4 rated at 300
