Hi,
I just joined the forum, and having recently purchased a 1981 F-100 with a 300 SIX . Was wondering if anyone has ever put in a modern Automatic over drive tranny in a truck like this ? If it possible ? And which tranny to use ?
This truck also has non power brakes. Is it a big deal to find the parts to convert to power brakes ? THANKS !!!
Try posting the trans question in the 300 six forum. I know I've seen questions like that on there.
As far as the brake question, it is probably possible but keep in mind the 80 to 83 F100 had a couple of different brake set up on them. Some had 10" brakes and some had 11". Some had manual and others had power brakes. Do some research and see what will work to convert yours.
Thanks for the welcome. I recently found a 1981 F-100 with a 300 6 !!
Friend found it on a Farm, it was a Farm work truck.Did not see much use.
You could tell it was worked dents etc... But original paint and only 20,000
miles on it !! In the shop getting fresh paint.Removed the box and cleaning up the frame.Truck real solid and pretty nice considering. It is a bare bones model not even a radio !! Surprisingly being a work truck it came with an automatic and not a stick ? Can anyone give me the code for the axle ratio so I can check what it is from the tag on it ? What did the base Automatics come with for rear gear ?
I need to get the front seat kit fot it. Worn but smells like horses etc LOL !!
Anyone suggested the best place to find a seat kit for it ? Really like the truck it is going to be great !!Thanks !!
If the truck has a 9" rear end it should have a small metsl tag on the center section. there sholud be 2 line of numbers and letters. The begining of the second line will tell you what the gear ratio is. Probably around 2.75 or 3.00 to 1.
Which seal are you looking for? The one under the hood next to the firewall?
Sound like you have a excellent truck to start with. Should last you a long time with the low miles on it.
Looking to remove the existing factory material and put an OEM style covering on it . There are several places that sell them ? Wondered if anyone could suggest a place to get it from ? Thanks
sounds like a nice truck. and welcome to the forum. about the power brakes you could find a set off of an other f100 like mine has power brakes not sure bout brake size but oh well. and with it being an automatic tranny (which one would be a help whether c5 or c6) the rear gear ratio possibilities are all over the board. i have a 302 with a c6 and i have 3.25 rear gears in a 9" and a friend has 2.75 gears in a 9" with a 300 with a c6 and his was an 80. so its all over the board. but with it being a farm truck it might have 3.55 gears for hauling but who know just check the tag.
Thanks for the advice.Really appreciate it. Yes it is a nice truck. It is in the shop now and we lifted the box and cleaned up and painted the frame front to back. I like it for the simplicity and reliability. What can go wrong ? It's a 300 six and 20,000 miles.Farm truck, still has the original brakes on it.Only thing I find odd are the non power brakes. It does have power steering.
Had the original paint too.Going to do a complete repaint. It will make for a great run about truck 8 Ft box and all.
