1983 F250 Project, starting problem

Hello all, I am new to Ford trucks and just picked up a 83 F-250 from my uncle for snow plowing and possibly hauling some stuff. I am coming over from the Jeep and offroading community.

It is an 4x4 with the 302 engine and 4 speed manual. It turns over but will not start. My uncle said it will start if he poured gas into the carb, so it is a fuel delivery problem.

Where should I start? I know the gas tank leaks, so that will be replaced. Does this have an electric pump in the tank? I have not pulled the tank yet. Should I hear the pump if I turn the key on?

Thanks for your help guys! Looking forward to working on this project!

-Eric

If it has an electric pump you probably should hear it as soon as you turn the key ... There are so many things that can go wrong ... Bad float ... Air in the fuel lines from holes in lines, leaky fuel pump, etc ... Many people will suggest that when you replace the fuel tank you put a good electric pump in and bypass the mechanical pump (if it is still there) ...

Well, just came in from outside. It has a mechanical pump, we ran a rubber gas line from the mechanical pump to a small can of gas and unhooked the fuel line from the carb. No fuel was pumped from the small can of gas through the pump. I removed the pump and it does not seem to move, so I am guessing it is frozen up.

Right now we will pick up a new fuel pump and try that out. This one seems pretty crapped up with grime and doesnt move.

Also the metal line going from the pump to the carb snapped, could have had a leak in that. Where would I get a new one of those, NAPA or Autozone?

Thanks!

If the fuel pump and line are crapped up, it's a good bet that the fuel filter is too. Probably ought to replace that as well. Sounds as if you are on the right track to getting this truck running.

Not sure. It varies with vehicle. Some have an in-line filter that looks like a fist-sized or slightly smaller drum with the fuel line passing through it and others are built into the base of the carb. Fuel injection systems are susceptible to particles in the fuel so probably have at least 2 filters. Carb'd engines should have 2 filters but sometimes don't. May depend on what the previous owner did.

Hello, I have a cherry 1983 F150 auto 4X4. Its 302 carb. with fuel pump on engine like old times. I think (in tank pumps) came with EFI engines. ??? maybe starting in year 84, with a few oddballs floating around. I got rid of carb. 302 and went to a (1991 Bronco or F150 302) swap came out very nice. Its Legal too. You might find a filter on the frame near drives feet /seat area. with 3-4 line go to it. If it reads DON NOT OPEN. then DO NOT you can't get O-ring seal back in place. Check flow from the out fitting. If it does not have the (DO NOT OPEN) then there IS A FILTER there also. Its about the size of a small SODA-CAN. like you get on air-o-planes or hostilals. Hope this might help out.. I,ve had my 83F150 since I bought new in sept.12 1982 its FOR SALE, I need the bucks. OH ya there is a computer controller under the seat, drivers side. I have one if you need. GOODLUCK. drop a line if you need something, or need to know somethin. I do not know alot, but I know what I need to know, most of time?? What?? I've got books dbrano@gmail.
