My cruise control has been inop for a couple years now. I did some minor checks early on and gave up - I never use it.
The other day I pulled my battery and tray to inspect my radiator overflow tank for a leak and I found a disconnected vacuum hose. I looked for a nipple in need of a hose and lo and behold the bottom of the cruise had one! The lines on top were connected.
So the cruise works now. I'm hoping the vacuum leak was causing all of the pinging I have had over the same period. A trip out to my boat will tell for sure.
I never did figure out where my coolant is going.
Well the cruise works fine now. The idle is smoother but the pinging continues after warmup. I've tried everything short of removing the intake manifold; Seafoam, new plugs, misc sensors, MAF cleaning, etc . Now I'm using Lucas with every fill-up to see if it will help.
It doesn't have an EGR - could it be a bad MAF still? I'm leaning towards a timing issue which probably means a bad PCM?
bet u have more bad failed hoses. mine were a mess, hardened, cracked, shortened, leaking, broken
how old is the O2 sensor, miles?
there is a "Octane Plug" per Ford on firewall above engine next to brake booster. drops timing approx 4 degrees. will cause code with plug removed to indicate plug is out
My scanner didn't reveal any codes. My O2 sensor has been replaced. The vacuum lines are in good shape but for some reason the cruise line wasn't connected. It may have gotten knocked off when I replaced the battery or something. The van only has 110K miles, it has been pinging for the last 30K or so. Modulator is in good shape. I get typical Aero mileage.
I'll bet if I removed the SPOUT plug the pinging would stop. Does the 93 4.0 have a separate SPOUT and Octane plug?
You might want to pull one or more of the plugs to see their condition. I got bad pinging under load caused by heavy carbon build-up on the plugs, caused by leaky fuel injectors. In that case, no amount of fuel system cleaners or octane plug removal helped.
