anyone else having trouble with these trucks? I drive an 08' F-550 at work and have already shopped it 3 times with only 21,000 miles. The radiator was the first to go, after that came the water pump, and last week they replaced thermostat and some other coolant related items. When running right, pulls fully loaded 40' duel tandem like a champ. What gives with the new engine? Our 06' F-350 just came outta the shop with a new head gasket @67,000. Much more of this and the company's changing brands.
there was a recall on the radiator, poor design to save money I am sure, once you do the fix that is it. As for the water pump issue, that is just bad luck.
Make a couple hundred thousand and one of them is gonna have a problem
As far as the 6.4, it shouldn't give you anymore problems.
The 6.0 is notorious for head gasket problems... due to faulty bolt design. Notorious is probably not a strong enough word, as this is probably the main catalyst for the Ford/Navistar... Eehh-rrr... shall we say, issues?

The earlier radiators had a crimping problem on the end tanks from the supplier, and the end tank would start to separate from the. There was also a recall on some piece on the cooling system going to the coolant reservoir. I believe it let air into the cooling system, possible causing damage to the radiator and other cooling system components. So I say that truck should be fine.
Also, remember that the 06 is a 6.0, which were known for head gasket problems. Problem is fixed with a set of ARP headstuds though. The 08 has the new 6.4, a much different engines with a lot less problems then the 6.0
With all the EPA mandates all 3 of the big truck mfgs. are having their problems. Neighbors Duramax has had 3 EGR's, an engine wiring harness and leaking P.S. pump. Roll the dice on any new diesel with all the new regs.

Who said the other brands are not having trouble. Right now it looks like Dodge is having the most serious problems. A service truck for a local manufacturing firm has been in the shop about a half dozen times for the EPA crap. It doesnt run right at all an they cannot figure out the problem. I suppose the 6.o has put a bad taste in the mouth off a lot off people but the 6.4 is well built motor. I got to look at the internals off one at a powerstroke display an i was really impressed how beefy the engine was built
Other than those 3 breakdowns, the 550 pulls like a champ. Dustin, it avg's 7-8 empty, and drops down to 5.5 when pulling fully loaded. For those in the market for the bigger light duty trucks, be prepared to shell out some money on fuel. Spent over $2000 on diesel last month. As for our 6.0 350 goes, aside from the head gasket runs great also. We regularly put over 5k on the bed, im surprised the springs are still holding up on it. The most we've hauled on the bed is 8k and I couldnt fit 2 fingers between the bed and tires. (Flat bed on both trucks) My GVW was a little over 18500. Talk about a big *** ticket for getting caught.
