48' 3sp Info
CHP - 495402
I got it from Macs
I also have a 1944 - 1952 Ford Body Parts Catalog June, 1956
Passenger Cars and Trucks.
FORM 3605
Neither of these has the complete list illistrations. Buy having both of these plus the Shop Manual, a real 1948 Panel Truck a good amount of a 46 Ford Coupe and about 10 F-whatevers at my Father-in-laws and all the fine people here I've pretty much figured out what the 48 - 50 are supposed to look like.
In all the Service Stations I've been around I never saw a complete service manual for a car maker until the late 60's. Everyone used the Motors Manuals, Chiltans, or simular "Shotgun" Manuals.
The Oil companies sent out pamphlets, posters and handbooks that showed major changes to maker systems, i.e. changes to Bendix Brakes, Autolite Ignations, etc. plus the held training classes every few years for the owner/operators where they brought in instructors from the manufactors.
Anyone know were I can get a used Tranny or a cluster gear and 1st gear slider cheap ?
going to count the number of teeth to make sure I know which one is required.
Early Ford Store in San Dimas (earlyfordstore.com) is one place you could try.
Then there's a HUGE long time wrecking yard (same location since 1929) in south LA that will prolly have the parts.
What is the tooth count on the cluster gear?
T87D for example: 40-31-21-17.
Got the cluster out today...here is the teeth counts of all of the gears..:
Cluster = 28-42-18-24
Input Gear = 16
second gear = 22
Low/Reverse = 29
I will be searching for parts next.. if anyone has a location on the following
1) Cluster Gear (#7113) researching now to find the correct one maybe a 51A-7113 ?
2) Low/Reverse Sliding Gear (#7100)
3) Rebuild kits (gaskets)
Almost everything else looks good, almost all of the synco teeth look good and pertty sharp, Going to inspect the bearings and C-Clips to see if any of them need replacing. Tight on budget (ex-wife's has got/getting all of the cash, hmm was about the same when married !? go figure) so, might have the cheap out on a complete rebuild.
Any suggestion or tips are welcome. Working out of an Old Motors Manual, covers 35-51.
thanks guys, you been a great help.

Are you sure that's the correct sequence and tooth count for the cluster gear?
I was hoping that by finding a gear that matched, I could figure out the rest of the parts.
But, not one cluster gear listed in the 1928/48 car & 1928/47 truck catalog, 1948/56 truck catalog, 1949/59 car catalog matches that tooth count/sequence.
The input shaft, low/reverse gear and second gear match what the cars used 1949/50.
The same part numbers for these three parts are not shown in the 48/56 truck catalog.
The cluster gear for 49/50 cars is: 8M-7113 = 28-24-18-14. Same count and sequence as 51A-7113.
The matching gear sets are list (To much to type in - see VanPelts site)
Oh and since its the light duty Transmission (As above) they are the same or optional as the car Transmissions sets from 39 - 52 including the Famed Lyncoln Zephyr Swap.

I just looked at my refs...51A-7113 was replaced by 8M-7113.
I found 8A-7113 listed, but no tooth count was shown.
I also have a 1953 Ford/Merc truck catalog, no 8A there either.
Some of these trans parts are still available from Ford, tho not the gears.
Casting number = 78-7006-1, a "T" Case
Serial Number = 87HC-84060 (top of bell housing, near the flange)
Looking for options.. would you have the correct parts ? Not sure what you have that will workout for me. Much of the information on what parts #'s in need or have are in the thread. If you have parts (or what they would be) and we can verify that they are the correct one, we can then workout something.
thank for contacting me.
