question for a friend

this is a first time for me, i am stumped as i have not actualy heard this issue.

the truck is an 03, crew cab long bed, equipped with a 1705 superchip, gauges, and and intake. also

the issue- while towing on heavy hills the truck will make a popping noise from the right side of the engine when the egt's hit 1000 degrees. the probe is pre-turbo and the truck is equipped with the map fooler. the boost levels are 10-14 psi.

again i have not been in the truck when this happens, but he is pretty worried about the noises. i cant see anything physicly wrong with the truck, no codes stored.

Need to get some more info from your buddy. A better description of the popping noise. Is in loud, constant, ect? Is it using or losing oil? Exhaust leaks? 10-14lbs of boost is kinda low for those EGT's if pulling. Check his turbo for excess play. Let us know if you get more info.

he lets off throttle as soon as it happens. so i dont know how long it would actually last if he stayed on throttle. he does not run it hard ever, especially towing so i am sure it was luggin a little bit in 3rd. he always clicks it out of overdrive on hills. he watches the egt's religously and is afraid to go over 1000 degrees. the turbo is fine, no exhaust leaks. wot the truck will hit 28 psi. as i said, i can see nothing physicly wrong with the truck, i know exactly what to look for but this is a new complaint for me...... he is going on a good long hard haul tihs weekend so i will try to get more updated info on the problem from him.

You need to try to hear the noise yourself so we can get a better description of how and what the sound is.

What kind of intake does he have? I am just thinking maby he is hearing turbo surge. I didn't hear surge with my stock intake with the Superchip I had, but maybe? I am confused about the turbo boost. If he can get 28# boost without pulling, something is wrong with this. When I hit a hill, the first thing that goes up is the boost. More info would be good.

he runs an afe, open air intake. i did not mean that he cant build boost while towing, i was saying that max boost capable is 28 psi. when this noise occurs he is starting to accelerate and is only at 10-14 psi on the large hills, he lets off as soon as the noise happens so the truck never gets the chance to produce boost. i have tried to hear the noise, i cant get it to happen around here, it will only do it pulling the mountains.

the only new news is that he said it only does this when in the hi performance setting, when he runs tow-safe, or tow-performance it will not do it. i also described what turbo surge sounds like and he said it sounds nothing like that. its a pop-pop-pop noise like someone has a hammer under the hood on the right side....

the superchip isnt exaclty a powerhouse chip. i think the tw chip on tow performance is better off then the superchip on max performance. how is it running it too hard? never heard of that

I can't explain the fueling strategies on a Superchip, but it appears the answer to the problem has been posted by you. Seems like he knows how to stop the problem.

That is surely not the answer you seek but it is beyond me. Perhaps someone else with a similar setup can shed some light as to whether he has the same observations.

I will stand aside now and spectate. Good luck.

If your buddy reads the Superchips instructions, it clearly says NO TOWING AT ALL in the highest setting. I had a SC and now a DP and I can tell you that there is a world of differance. I agree the highest setting on the SC don't equal the 80 setting on my DP, but the engine also acts so much differant with the DP.
The simple answer is to tell him not to tow in the high setting, the best answer for him if he needs more towing power it the get a DP-Tuner and supporting mods.
