Hello everyone Ive got a 03 superduty 6.0, with 61,000, auto, I was pulling a horse trailer up a mountain this morning it down shifted then started makeing a noise like the tire was rubbing the plastic fender well, you could let off and it would stop it also was puffing some black smoke I stoped at the top of the mountain looked under the hood didnt see anything that had come off shut the hood drove another 80 miles it never did it again until coming home half way up a hill did it for 45sec or so then didnt do it the rest of the way home any body got any clues thank you.
I concur with bpounds on the turbo starting to take a dump. The reason I don't think it is a split hose is that it would not come and go. A split hose would leak under the smallest boost of the turbo. I too am not a tech, just my uneducated guess. That and 4 bucks gets you a beer.

Good point. Although the noise might come and go, depending on how much boost flow was blowing through the leak.
bpounds, I would say more of a huffing sound, and I did notice the hose that is blue, did have some soot or looked dirty when I stoped to check it. thanks to all that replied
There was a guy in the 6.0 forum that made a video of his truck making a similar sound,,he was pulling a hill,,with TT (I think)in tow,,think it was his Turbo acting up,,Good luck,,his was either 03' or 04' I believe !
A good way to make sure its not the hoses is to remove them, clean both the hoses and the Intercooler and pipes with brake cleaner and then reinstall them. Make sure that you do not over torque the clamps or you will ruin them. I too would agree though that if it were a split hoses or damaged CAC it would do it all the time. More than likely the turbo is over boosting or underboosting. Do you have a boost guage installed by any chance...if so what were your boost readings, also did the check engine light ever come on? if so did you check what codes were stored.
My wife drives the truck everyday, I only drive it when we go some where like out of town after I posted sunday night I told her when she drove it to blow it out a few times which she did,she said it seamed to run better and didnt smoke anymore both of us drive it easy, I know if there is a problem its still not fixed so this weekend ill do some of the things you all have sugested and to answer your question sarge261 I dont have a boost gauge so that hasnt been checked, again thank you all for the help.
I agree with bpounds. Thats why I asked if he could see the boost numbers and if the CEL came on. I know on the 05-07 you will get an underboost code when infact the truck is overboosting.
