Have A Problem

We left Friday morning to head to the NC mountains. Truck was at dealer for service before leaving and to replace the hydro boost unit (covered under extd warranty). While going up Black Mountain it went into Drive to Clean and then Cleaning Exhaust Filter. The Cleaning Exhaust message stayed on for 10 miles and then went off. When it went in to Drive to Clean it lost some power - not a surprise on that incline -BUT it did shoot out a PUFF of white smoke. Truck continued to run fine - no errors and gauges good. We got to the cg and unhooked. That is when I noticed a residue under the front passenger wheel well. Upon looking it is under the truck and 5er. I popped hood and checked fluids - all appears good. Motor was still warm - degas was a little over max cold fill range. I can not find source of problem but think it is coolant. Anybody have any ideas or suggestions? Hope to find a dealer in am that will look at it. Not much fun 350 miles from home. Thanks

Yes sounds like it is coolant related. But you start the truck check all fluids. This sounds to me like EGR cooler related.

If you look thru the drivers side wheel well you can see the coolers where they come together. Do you see some coolant there?

Also check around the frame rails by the tow hooks. Radiator tend to drip down there if that is a failure.

At any rate they will pressure test the system.

I could not see anything around radiator top or bottom and will look around drivers side. It appears to be from passengers side because frame, wheel well, and step have the residue. Getting ready to go to local dealership and see if they can help. I am concerned if there could have been any internal damage and hope it is ok to drive the short distance. I will check fluids before leaving. Thanks for the reply.

maybe something to do with a heater hose then. As long as it starts normal I'd drive it after fluid checks.

Easy and slow.

Back from the dealer and not a happy camper. Fluid was tranmission that had come through the vent hole in the top of the tranny. The tech said the fluid was very dark colored. They drove it and said it was shifting fine - they speculate the torqconverter but will start to break it down today. When they checked the tranny fluid level it was not low. He said fluid out of the vent hole was not common. The puff of smoke was fluid on the exhaust. There were not any codes and temp gauges were pointing at 11:00 which is normal. Coincidence or not - we saw the puff of smoke when it went into 'Drive to Clean'. Some good news-->my mileage was 59850 so covered under warranty. Are there any questions I need to be asking? Thanks Now I just have to get my 5er down from the top of this mountain.

one question to ask is there going to be an extension of the warranty and for how long. This is not a common thing.

This is actually much better outcome if you think about it. You do not want anything wrong with the motor.

I can probably count on one hand those that I know of that have had tranny issues.

Be sure they flush and clean it out...but I am sure that they will

A couple of questions:

1) Would the Ford warranty help with any of my expenses considering the situtation I am in - possibly the roadside asst. program? Somebody asked me today so I thought I would throw it out there to get any thoughts.

2) Is it possible nothing is wrong even though fluid came out of the vent hole? The tech drove it and said all seemed fine though he said the symptom indicated a problem. 'We can't find anything wrong' does not seem like an option.

I am wondering what opinions others may have. The dealer has the knowledge of the guy working on it and on here is the knowledge of lots of guys.

Thanks

I have good sam roadside assistance. I also have an extended warranty with my insurance that will help in those situations. I don't think roadside assistance does that. I'd call just to check.

It is possible that it was an overfill situation but close to 60K before it pukes...unlikely in my book.

Problem was torqe converter - tech said metal in fluid and he could see where it came from. They are checking the rest of the tranny today but said what they have seen so far looks ok. Is this a common failure? What online reading I can do makes me beleive it is not. Still waiting to hear from Ford roadside to see if they will help with any expenses since it is warranty work.

The only issues I've heard were related to extended use of high HP race tunes. Haven't heard of a stock vehicle having a problem.
