Does anybody have an opinion on Mud King tires? I'm considering a set of 35/12.5R15's and would appreciate your thoughts on quality, wear, noise, and performance.

They are a good mud tire and hiway but the wear will depend on how the truck is set. I have got anywhere form 7000 to 30000 mi. On them but for almost the same money you can get a set of swampers
Harv72,
Im curriouse why you are considering Mud Kings? I dont anyone who uses them, but they dont do the best in comparrison tests. And I rarely see them in any form of competition. If you can get them for some fantastic price or something along those lines, then swoop em up and see what you think of em off road. However if you have to spend good money dollar for dollar they wouldnt be my 1st choice. BFG Mud Terrains have always been at the top of the list as far as ON and OFF Road qualities. Interco Swampers and Boggers are probably slightly better than BFG off road(although many would argue otherwise),but highway characteristics are not as good. GOODYEAR, tired of not being a front runner in this area, has just introduced the new Wrangler MT, they have been testing them for the last 6 months at rock crawling and mud bogg competitions. I was able to test a set on my jeep at Wrecking Ball,( a viciouse rock trail in Johnson Valley, Ca.)they are very impressive tires. They were used on 4 of the top 5 winners at the last Rock Crawling Comp. in New Mexico.

The reason that I'm looking at Mud Kings is price. I can get them for $126/each, mounted. I realize that BFG's and TSL's are better quality, but the cheapest BFG in my area is $185/each, mounted. I currently have TSL Radials, size 36/14.50R15 on my '78 Bronco. I want to drop to 35's to gain better on road performance and the ability to have them balanced. Tire shops in my area shy away from anything over 12.50 wide and 35 tall. I've been happy with the performance of my TSL's, but can't justify $800 tires on vehicle that's driven less than 5000 miles a year. I do like the look of the new Wrangler MT's, but I would imagine that they run in the same price range as the BFG's.
Since you're in the market for cheap mud tires, I figured I'd say something. I had ordered 33x12.5 swampers, but they for some reason were on back order and no one could get them for me, so I just went to a cheap brand. I got General Grabber MT's instead. They seem to be a great tire so far, little noisy on the highway, but not bad. I got them for $120 a piece. Personally, I looked at the Mud Kings, but the tread on the Grabber's looked much more aggressive. Check them out, they have a real wide tread like Swampers. Just my two cents.
I bought my third set of Sport Kings, and am loving them. I also bought because of price (BFG's were over $100+ a tire), but bought the sport kings instead of mud kings due to suggestion from the tire dealership. He said they were a harder compound, and would be horrid in the winter (I use my trucks as daily drivers, working on property, plowing in winter, travelling, etc..). I get on average about 85,000 km (couldn't tell you in miles, sorry , and will put them on my next truck as well. So far, not a single problem on either my 94 S-10 ext cab 4x, or my 86 F-150 4x.
Loved the thought of throwing thornbirds, or BFG's or...but when it came down to $ and all round usage, couldn't be happier
I've also got the General Grabber MT's and they're great. I"ve put about 4k miles on them so far and theres no sign of wear. Off-road the just kick @$$! My truck is only 2wd, and they've pulled me through all but one mudhole so far (and that one hole I did get stuck in was because my front bumper though it was a bulldozer).
Mud Kings are as good of a tire as BFG since they are just an off-spring of BFG's & made in the same place. I have had both & had good luck out of each but the best wearing tire, for an aggresive, that I have run is the Courser OTD. I could get 35,000-40,000 out of a set & I pulled trailers with as much as 25,000 pounds. The Courser is made by Cooper so you should be able to find them about anywhere.
Mud King couldn't cut it as a BFG. The BFG mud is one of the best mud tires out there for gereral purpose. If i were you, save for one more month and get the BFG's. My opion....
Check out Petersen's 4Wheel & Off-Road June 2001. They did a head to head test with some of the 10 most pop mud tires out there. Out of 10, the BFG mud was 6.....not to bad considering that 3 out of the 5 that beat it was Swamper tires. Also had the 4th best distance in the mud.....60ft out of 100. Second best was only 75 ft. Just some Colmans camp fuel for the fire.....
Ya know I have BFG mud terrians on my 93 f150 and if I had to do it over I would have gone with the all terrian. The mud terrians are an aggresive tire and dont wear all that well on the street.Which Im sure you knew that already. They are wearing much faster than I had thought they would. My truck is driven on the street much more than off road. I did find some 35"x 12.50 for 155.00 Considering most other stores carry them for 180+, that wasnt to bad. Dont know what area you are in but I am in So Calif. Dont know much about the tires you are inquiring about, guess it depends on how much off road you do, but for 120.00 and they appeal to you then get em. But if your concerned about tire wear and noise then you might want to check different brands of all terrian. You already have 36" tires on your vechile so your obviously not new to this, so Im probably wasting your time here. anyway......
