engine noise up front

I have a tapping/clicking noise coming from the front behind the serp/belt idler arm on a 4.6 e250 2004.nobody seems to know what it is? I say it's something in the timing chain, i have been told that you need a special too to hold the camshafts in place while changing the chain-is that correct? Could it be the oil pump thats causing this noise since it is a hydrollick chain tentioner? Any ideas ? the van has 320,000 miles on it and runs very good for the ammount of miles. thanks for any info.

Does the tensioner arm vibrate much or bounce? Serp belts are famous for getting dirt impacted in the small belt grooves on their pulleys. The lumps of dirt can be like a bumpy road or pot holes, causing the tensioner arm to twitch. Sometimes simply cleaning out the grooves on the pulleys is all that's needed to quiet things down.

The tensioner arm does not vibrate,no dirt etc. I have taken the serpentine belt off and started the van but the noise is still there. have spun all the pulley's and they all spin pretty freely, alt, ac clutch every thing seems ok.
