Considering an Excursion

Found the following Excursion:

2001 4x2 with 5.4L engine
105K miles
One owner
No major repairs
No accidents
Mostly been people hauler, very little towing
Asking $6,500

I have been reading the posts on this site this evening concerning the 5.4L engine, some say underpower, some say ok. We would use vehicle to haul family (10 as of April, 2009, eight children ages 14 down to newborn (total family weight about 700 lbs)), planning to install Little Seat in the cargo area for 2-3 children (www.littleseats.com). We currently have 1994 Suburban with 5.7L engine, and it totes us fine. We live in an area that is flat in some areas, somewhat hilly in others. We drive about 10-12K per year.

Looking for pros/cons of this Excursion. Thank you for your time.

Strictly as a people mover (i.e. no towing)...the 5.4L would be okay for you.

I would check out the ball joints on the Ex...they are known to go bad at about the mileage you have. If they have to install new ball joints...have them install ones you can GREASE in the future.

Also tire condition?...these tires aren't cheap.

Power door locks are also a known issue...make sure all the doors lock and unlock properly.

The Ex is an incredible vehicle...

As a people mover I don't think you would have any regrets with the 5.4L...some may disagree though...

If the Ex looks nice and you like it...(sounds like it is a good one)...go for it!

Joe.

The 5.4 was able to haul around my E-350 super duty full of a unit of 1/2" plywood and a bunch of 2X4's and generator, random tools, buckets of tar etc etc and 2 big workers with no problems and had some pep. I dont think it would be an issue moving a big family as longa s your not towing anything.

I agree with the baove post. I would check the bottoms of the doors for any signs of rust as well. Also check the roof for dents, and move thr crossbeams on the roof, see if the paint under them has worn down, very common problem.

My wife and children went from a 1996 Suburban with the Anahiem conversion (TV in center console and wood grain accents) to a 2000 Limited Excursion diesel (the A/C is what she wanted). The Excursion has TV's in the back head rests of the front seats and also has an big amplifier for the stereo. When we bought it 5 years ago I told her to drive it for a year and if she did not like it I would get something else or replace the towing mirrors with the paddle ones. To this day, I cannot get her to commit to get something else. I think once your wife drives the Excursion and feels the difference of a solid ride and feeling a little more safe on the road, she will be sold; oh yeah, the Excursion has a tighter turning radius than the Suburban to. I cannot coment on the 5.4L engine as the diesel is the only option for me for longevity, but it sounds like the Excursion you are looking at has a descent price. Also check the back windows to make sure they open and close properly...when my wife does not use them (during the winter) they tend to get stuck and if you are not careful you can burn up the motor that operates them.

years ago ( mid 70's ) i remeber one of my uncles had a ford LTD wagon with a jump seat in the rear. i thought it was cool to ride back there ....today, i really like my ex, 2001, 4 x 4, v-10, all stock, 149,000, right ball joints replaced, issues with door locks. tows like an ox. gas milage 12 - 13 around town, 14-16 highway, 8-10 towing 29' fleetwood lynx.

My neighbor told me last night he is about to pull the trigger on buying a brand new Excursion, he says he has a deal working for $18K off of sticker.

The Excursion is not offered by Ford Motor Company anymore...I think 2005 was the last year.

I didn't know that, that is odd... I'll have to ask him what he was talking about!

As stated above, he's not buying a brand new Excursion. And if he is buying a brand new Expedition EL,
I would like one at $18,000 off MSRP too if you can ask him to call me and tell me where.

We have a 15 passenger church bus that built on an 2003 E350 cutaway frame and it has a 5.4. It has plenty of pep and the 5.4 has been a good engine.

Large SUV's and pickups are going for unheard of low prices now. The papers are advertising brand new F-150's for mid 9's around chicago, and I bet you can go in there and shave that price down more. Even if its a 2 seat, standard box, XL thats still an amazing deal in my opinion!

Prior to my 05 EX I had an 01 with the 5.4 and never had any problems. I towed a 18' jet boat with it and it was just fine. Just remember the Ex is not a race car. It's great for hauling kids and stuff. I like it because even with the 3rd row seat being used there is still a TON of room behind it.

WHen I got the Ex in 01 I wanted and Expy but they were $3k more than the Ex. Less vehicle and more $ didn't make sense to me. I liked it so much I traded up to the 4x4 Diesel in 05.
