Found some hidden rust spots.

So i had a taillight burn out, and when I pulled the taillight I noticed the lil clips that hold the screws for the taillight in are made of junk metal that was rusting and starting to make the metal they were clipped onto rust! Not too bad but I caught it early it seems. When you look through the taillight hole you can see all the way down to the ground, wide open. I guess all those times I blasted a water hose up under the truck in the winter maybe wasn't such a bad idea after all. Gonna go see if I can get some stainless or at least coated clips to replace these at teh hardware store.

I suggest everyone else do the same as it should only take a few minutes and I'm sure I'm not the only one with this problem. Glad I caught it before I one day found rust creeping out from behind a tail light and had a heart attack! Ford really used some junk hardware on these trucks. Maybe thats why they use oversize bolts compared to everyone else, cause they rot away so fast??? Don't mind me I'm not happy right now lol....

It probably wouldn't hurt to spray the area with undercoating or bedliner material or even a cosmoline based corrosion inhibitor. You will not see it, so anything can protect it.

Since it doesn't get a lot of wash spray up there to wash it off, a good heavy grease is always helpful in those areas. Messy, yes but it works to keep the corrosion down.

A lot of classic car folks spray the undercarriage with used motor oil before they store the car for winter. It takes a while to clean up in spring, but it provides excellent protection.
