I just put a new horn kit in my 51 panel, spring, contact plate, wire and button. When I got the truck it only had 1 horn, mounted to hood, and the relay had 1 wire ran to power and everything else was missing. I cleaned up the 3 relay contacts and also the mounting plate for good contact, and hooked it up as per Julies Cool F1 and another diagram I found ( both the same but for 12 V ). When I push the horn button, all I get is a click inside the relay (with and without the horn hooked up ) The relay is real old looking, most likly original. I am guessing new relay. Also is it OK to go with 1 horn?. The manual shows 2 horns. Any ideas on these things ?
Thanks John
Yep one horn is ok. On my truck I have 4 horns on the same relay. I'm thinking that your relay is either old, or if you are running the original 6 volt system (and th epositive ground) the hook ups may be different than in my diagram - which is 12 volt, negative ground.
Please refresh my memory on whether or not youhave converted to 12 volt. I'll try and find the hook up directions for the relay if it's 6 volt, and you can buy a new one of those at any of the resto parts houses.
Hey Julie, Yea, Its still 6 volts. I will include the new relay in an order I am making at MACs. I have been looking thru some catalogs for horns but have only seen them on Ebay once in a while. I'll Google 6V horns and see what comes up

Yep, that makes a diff. There are a few posts here at FTE about horns and where to get some nice ones. I'd do a search and it will probably help quite a bit. One horn is fine if that's all you want. I absolutely needed four big horns (and a Kevlar horn button)
OBTW, I did a little research and I think this is how you need to wire that 6V horn relay. I'd try it before I order a new relay. Maybe one of the guys still running 6 volt could confirm this for me.
If you don't see the difference right off, the "Power" and "Button" wires are flip flopped from 12 volt - might be due to the polarity - not sure. Let me know how it works out for you.
You can open up the "can" on your existing relay, and clean the contacts. Spiders and other stuff gets in there and gunks up the contacts. Use a "diamond" nail file -- eveery woman has one. If it's clicking it's still salvageable.

Tee hee-
"Eveery woman" who drives Bonus Built or Fat Fendered Ford Trucks usually has more than one!
Julie,The hot wire was on the terminal ( far right) as per your drawling. Ross,I will open it up and clean up the contacts to see what happens. I may have damaged the horn when I bumped a tiny spring across the contacts which was wraped around a cardboard type material. The spring didnt break but the material in the middle kinked a bit. We will see
Thanks John
Back again with this one.
1.-I opened up old relay and cleaned contacts...NADA..just clicking
2.-Got new relay hooked up.....Same as #1
3.-Cleaned contacts on horn and jumped it on Batt..It sounded,.. but sick
4.-Put horn back in mounting brackets underside of hood,(this is interesting) only clicked once when button was depressed but no click when button pressure is released..relay sticks on.
5.-The new relay was marked from left to right.. H-B-S..so I swapped The B and S wire and got sound ( NO BS... ) so... in my/this case, the 6 V is wired the same as the 12 V......I think....alls I know is my horn now works. My mind gets a cramp every time I mess with wires.
Thanks again you great FTE people. One step closer to gettin this old dude tagged and back a useful member of the truck community. I most appreciate this place. John
Wow that's great that you got the horn working finally!!! They will sound a little "cow like" until you blast all the rust and spiders and stuff out of them...
I have a question for you because it helps me critique the help I give to people to find out why these different things happen.
You mentioned that you are still running a 6 volt electrical system. OK, so, just so I'm clear, were the B and S positions switched on the relay itself, or did you flip flop the wires and put the S wire on the B terminal and vice versa. And one last question, are you still running positive ground with that 6 Volt system.
One of the reasons I ask about the relay is because the new 6 volt relay I have out in the garage is definately marked H-B-S which is "Horn," "Button" and "[Power] Source." like the one you described. What I'm thinking is if the relays are made for negative ground and you have positive or vice versa, it makes a difference???????
Julie..... Yea Thanks for your help...again...I flip flopped the wires. I thought to mention I am running the 6V poss ground but,... I forgot to mention that in my last post. I put the power wire on the button post and the button wire on the power post and it worked. I got the new relay at Macs which was labled " 6 Volt, may be marked 12 Volt " and the relay had 12 V stamped in the mount bracket. I guess 12 V means 6 V in Chinese .
