My truck is a 99 and has had the window Ventshades installed from day 1 or 2. They now need to be replaced. Any tips on removal. Also any ideas on re-prepping the old surface? Is there any kind of 'primer' available to bond the new tape to the old weatherstriping?
Thanks in advance.....
Heat up the adhesive tape strip area with a heat gun or blow dryer to loosen 'em up and pull 'em off slowly. 3M adhesive remover will clean up the sticky stuff left behind without damaging the paint. Do a final clean with rubbing alcohol before you install the new ones, and you're good to go.
I just realized you probably are asking about the in-channel ones. I'm not sure on that one. Heating them will make it easier to remove them, but I don't know how you'd clean up the seal without damaging it.
Joe, I hope you have better luck than I did getting mine off. It took me forever to get mine off. As Austin said use a heat gun or blow drier on them and that will make the removal easier. Mine broke to pieces taking them off-no problem just make sure you put saftey glasses off so you dont get any plastic in the eyes. the PITA was getting the foam tape off the weatherstripping. It took me an entire can of goof-off to get the weatherstripping clean of all the residue before I could install the new ones. After all the cleaning with the goof off I did not even use the alcohol before putting the new ones on.
let us know how it goes.
Mine were weather strip mounted and ended up winning the fight. I had to take a razor blade to the tape. It wouldn't come off no matter what i did. So my weather strip has some knicks in it, but they were already worn pretty bad I guess... I tried goo gone, adhesive remover etc. The best prep for the weather strip is probably isoproyl alcohol... good luck, and don't resort to a razor blade like I did haha
Yep, mine have the double-sided foam tape that goes directly to the robber window gasket. Who would have thought that they were so brittle. I am at the fire station today and started the project. I will finish it tomorrow with the assistance of Miller Lite.
Goof-Off seems to work, just not very damn well. It is reminding me of the foil delete project, just on a much more fragile surface.
