I have an '04 F250 4X4, gas V8, with about 67K miles that gives a noisy 3-4 shift from time to time. It seems to occur randomly but always under some acceleration. It sounds a bit like a heat shield vibrating and is accompanied by a slight rise in RPM. I don't notice any drive train vibration when it happens; just the noise. I did a tranny fluid and filter change (Thanks Mark), magnet looked good but no real relief with the rattle. All other shifts seem crisp and quiet. I just got the truck about a month ago. Any ideas from the group would be appreciated.
It could be a variety of things from clutch pack noise to a heat shield coming loose.
I know this is a bit rough but, it sounds to me like the overdrive drum snap ring (retaining the OD one way bearing and clutches) is starting to come out of its slot. I've encountered this on an E4OD and a 4R100 that started with the same noise. It then in time went to a thunk and the truck didn't move afterwards.
Thanks for the suggestions. I use it as essentially a farm vehicle. It will see 3-5K miles a year at best. I don't think its shudder since I feel no vibration when this condition occurs; just the noise. I guess I'll drive it until it quits and then get it fixed.
Torque converter shudder and noises from the transmission are completely different. Are you Pot-shooting?
Pot shooting???? I'm glad that i've never heard that before or i probabley would be offended..
I was just reading his post and relating it to my own problem as they seemed a little similiar to mine as i heard quite a few strange noises before i replaced my t/c.
You see mr/mrs Heavy Metal, not all of us here are as fine tuned as yourself(hearing wise anyway), to suggest a snap ring going bad from the printed description provided. I merely made a suggestion as to area he could compare his symptoms.
An update on this. In addition to the fluid/filter change, I added a quart of Lucas Transmission Fix and 500-600 miles later the shift noise has disappeared. Haven't heard it in weeks.
Have similar problem with 2003 F250. Has vibrating noise shifting to 3rd - same noise but louder shifting to 4th. Doesn't happen on every shift. No noise I can tell from other two gears. Seems like the Direct Clutch Pack is the common factor for 3 & 4. Has anyone tried an anti-slip additive for this problem?
